A guided missile cruiser and guided missile destroyer are coming home to Naval Base San Diego this morning after 9:00 AM. The USS Cowpens, the cruiser, and its 400 crew left in September to help with relief efforts in the Philippines following the Typhoon. The destroyer USS Spruance and its 260 member crew left San Diego in October for their maiden deployment. They spent time patrolling the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

This afternoon at 1:30 in San Diego’s courthouse 26-year-old Richard Christopher Butts will hear his fate for kidnapping and sexually assaulting two women in Ocean Beach. The two separate attacks happened with in a seven-month time span.

Butts assaulted a woman in her mid-twenties as she walked home from a friend’s house. Then he kidnapped and raped another woman. In testimony one of his victims says that Butts punched her twice from behind, drug her away and tried to rape her. Witnesses say they heard her screaming quote “Please stop! Don’t do this!” Reportedly Butts will get 30-year to life in prison as part of a plea deal.

This afternoon at 2:00 the San Diego Opera’s Board of Directors is meeting at the Hyatt La Jolla Aventine to try and keep the opera afloat. Then at 4:00 supporters of the opera are hosting a public meeting in the Copper Room of City Hall. Last month the Board of Directors voted to close the Opera saying they just don’t have the money. But then the critics came out saying the Board is paid exuberantly and is plagued with other financial problems that if fixed could keep the opera afloat. Also some performers filed a lawsuit in an attempt to force the opera to the arbitration table over their unpaid contracts.

This morning at 8:30 the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless is releasing its annual Point-In-Time homeless count at a press conference at the United Way’s Murphy Canyon building. Last year they counted 8,879 homeless people (that’s down 7.9% from the year before) 75% were men, 69% had been on the streets for over a year and 15% were veterans. It’ll be interesting to see what changes for this year.

At 10 AM the media is getting to ride in a Vietnam War-era swift boat thanks to the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Veterans that worked on the boats will also be on hand to share their stories.

Allowing drivers to access info that their cars computers collect is what several mechanics and consumer advocates want. They’re talking to the press about that at 10:30 this morning at John’s Automotive Care on Riverdale Street.

At 11:30 AM courageous officers and citizens are being honored by California State Attorney General Kamala Harris.

At noon Washington Middle School is unveiling its new aquatic fitness gear they bought with a $22,000 dollar grant from the Chargers.

And finally this afternoon at 1:00 at the San Diego Firehouse Museum former Fire Capitan Frank Baron is celebrating his 100th birthday. Frank first joined the San Diego fire department in 1941 and served for 25-years.

San Diego’s City Council will consider changes to the Barrio Logan Community Plan today. The top issues for the plan are housing, what to do with the shipyards, Navy Base San Diego, and the environment. It’s thought that once agreed upon this plan will affect this community for decades to come.

Mayoral candidate Kevin Faulconer is picking up another endorsement this afternoon at 1:00. The San Diego Hotel-Motel Association will officially give their support to the Republican hopeful.

This morning the USS Cowpens will leave on a seven-month deployment. The Navy says that the cruiser and its 400 member crew will head for the Western Pacific.

Vista Unified School District will guarantee their graduating students admission into Cal State San Marco this morning at 10:30 by signing a memorandum of understanding with the university. So now if a child graduates form a high school in the Vista Unified District and they’ve taken the right classes they will get into CSU San Marcos.

San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is getting together tonight at 5:00. On the agenda, building neighborhood school as part of their “Vision 2020” plan

In court this afternoon at 1:30 there are three notable arraignments.

First Casey Allen Wilson, Robert Anthony Hodge, and Laura Elshire will be accused of a series of bank heists. At one of the supposed robberies Wilson was shot by a security guard.

Then Rachel Escobedo will be before a judge. Escobedo is an elementary school principal accused of possessing a stolen gun and drugs.

Lastly Douglas Ellens will be accused of robbing three banks. Two of them with in 90 minutes of each other.

Today is the second anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement. In San Diego a rally is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the Civic Center plaza with a march through downtown after.

Today is day four of the hotel workers hunger strike. It all began when the Hilton hotel started using e-verify to confirm the immigration status of their workers. Six workers quit and nine have yet to be verified. The nine say they are allowed to work in the states and that they only make $8.40 and an hour … all combined this is causing their families great pain. The nine are hopping to find out today at 5 pm if they can go back to work.

Six to nine foot waves will pound San Diego beaches today according to the National Weather Service. A six to nine foot wave means theses waves will have 12-18 foot wave faces. That’s huge. Along with the high surf rip currents are expected as well. Together they are very dangerous, just watch from the shore today.

Opening statements in the case against two men allegedly caught on surveillance video abusing an autistic man begins this morning at 9:00 AM in Vista.

At 9:30 the USS Cowpens is arriving at Naval Base San Diego. The Cowpens has been based in Japan for 13-years.

Sentencing at 1:30 this afternoon for the man shot by police inside a movie theater after he threatened his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint.

This morning Scott Peters and Juan Vargas will be sworn into congress by Vice President Joe Biden. The two Democrats are both new to congress. Peters defeated incumbent Republican Brian Bilbray in a narrow race. Vargas won the seat vacated by San Diego’s new Mayor Bob Filner.

Filner, a Democrat, left congress after ten terms for San Diego’s Mayor’s Office.

Other members of San Diego’s Congressional delegation are Republican Darrell Issa, Republican Duncan Hunter, and Democrat Susan Davis.

The guided missile cruiser USS Antietam is moving to its new home port of Yokasuka Japan today. The crew then takes over the USS Cowpens and brings it to San Diego. This is called a “hull swap”, when crews trade ships.

And on utsandiego.com today Sandra Dibble has a story about U-S and Mexican governments opening a shared border inspection station. In the article Dibble says quote “The aim of the pilot program is to speed up the processing of certain produce items — and thus improve the bottom line for businesses.”
