The strike of 13,000 hospital workers has been narrowly averted. Over the weekend union and University of California hospitals came to an agreement after marathon negotiations. Picketing was supposed to start this morning at 7:00 AM at hospitals run by the University of California In San Diego that meant hospitals in Hillcrest and La Jolla would be affected. Kathryn Lybarger, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees or AFSCME Local 3299 says the new agreement “reflects compromise on both sides, improves safety in UC hospitals, and honors the important contributions to patient care technical workers” The union’s 22,000 members will vote on the new contract on March 26 & 27 … that’s this Wednesday and Thursday.

The U.S. Justice Department is talking to the press today at 11:00 AM about how they are going to help the San Diego Police Department set up an Office of Community Oriented Policing Services or COPS Office. The COPS office is being set up as a result of several incidents of officer misconduct.

At the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation tonight at 6:00 San Diego’s new police Chief Shelley Zimmerman is meeting with several people from the Southeastern San Diego area that say the SDPD is racially profiling them. In this town hall style meeting called “Meet the Chief” Chief Zimmerman says she hopes to instill a “culture of excellence” and that officers not living up to this standard will not be tolerated.

San Diego City Council has a full docket today.

First at 9:00 AM the Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee is getting together and talking about a ballot measure that will raise San Diego’s minimum wage and require employers give five sick-days to employees.

Then at 2:00 the full council gets together and they are talking about who get some federal block grants for community development. They’re also talking about using a $1,000,000 city budget surplus to keep homeless shelters open three months longer than they are now.

wait … there’s a million dollars budget surplus? I’m going to look into that.

In Vista’s courthouse at 1:30 college student Samuel Ruiz is being sentenced for sending threatening messages following the murder of a 13-year-old and 15-year-old at a park. Ruiz and his threats have no relation to the murders; this was some kind of prank, however threatening someone over the phone is a crime.

San Diego’s first Red Flag Warning of the season is in effect. A dangerous weather cocktail of gusty winds, low humidity, and high temperatures are why the National Weather Service in San Diego issued the warning. The warning is in effect until 5:00 PM Friday.

San Diego County’s Health and Human Services is investigating two confirmed and two possible cases of meningococcal disease. Commonly known as meningitis. A 22-year-old man hospitalized on April 9th died from the disses and a 47-year-old man is still in the hospital. The disease is spread through close contact like sharing a drinking glass or kissing. Symptoms include fever, headache, lethargy, stiff neck and a rash. Health Officials say if you’ve had close contact with an infected person to seek medical treatment.

This morning at 6am Goodwill Industries and Kaiser Permantente are hosting an e-waste recycling event. If you have any old electronics you can take them to 4405 Vandever Ave.

At 10:00 AM University of California at San Diego students are going to sort through a thousand pounds of trash to show how most garbage still has many things in it that can be recycled.

And at 1:00 PM in Bonita Cove the San Diego Triathlon is having its pre-race expo. No word yet on any enhanced security because of the Boston Marathon bombing. The woman’s race is on Friday and the men Saturday.

A father is murdered and San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives suspect the 22-year-old son. Just before 10:00 last night deputies were called to a Spring Valley home because of a domestic disturbance. The Sheriff office says that the deputies found the father with a stab wound and the son was on the run … Deputies began their hunt. After about an hour someone was taken into custody, however at this time there is no confirmation yet that he is the son or another suspect. What I do have confirmed is that the man in custody is thought to be involved somehow. Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives will send out more info later.

This morning at 8:30 the arraignment for the man accused of kidnapping and Sexually assaulting a woman walking home in the San Diego beach community of Ocean Beach will happen.

And…Cal Fire is having its preparedness drill this morning at 8:00. Fire crews will drill and prepare in anticipation of a busy wildfire year.

Anti XL Pipeline protesters will hit the streets of Coronado this afternoon at 11:45. They are protesting outside a meeting of the American Petroleum Industry or A-P-I. The protestors say that the A-P-I is spreading misinformation about the climate and the proposed X-L Pipeline.

And this evening at 8:00 the University of California at San Diego kicks off Earth Week with a “Trashion Show”. This a fashion show with clothing made from trash.
