The 684-foot USS Summerset is coming home to San Diego this afternoon around 1:30. It’s the third of three ships for the Navy named in honor of the 9/11 attacks. The Summerset is named after Summerset County which is the county wear United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville Pennsylvania. The amphibious transport dock ship was commissioned on March 1st. It has a crew of about 400, can transport 1,200 Marines, carry helicopters and deliver cargo.

Three U.S. Coast Guard mariners are being honored this afternoon at 3:00. Last May they rescue a father and his two adult sons from their capsized boast off coast near La Jolla.

In court today three sentencing’s of note..

In San Diego’s courthouse at 9:30 Phillip and Roselia Kubeck along with Earl Allen are being sentenced for bringing people into the United States through a hole in border fence then flying them in a small private plane all over the country.

Still in San Diego but at 1:30 Shawn Moore is being sentenced. Moore was caught during a robbery, tried to run away, tripped, fell and was hit by a car.

Also at 1:30 but in Vista’s courthouse Robert James Lynch is being sentenced for after pleading guilty to charges he related to a carjacking.

At 10:00 AM Earth Week at University of California San Diego starts today and to kick it off students are going to sort 1,000 pounds of trash. In the annual demo the refuse is dumped along UC San Diego’s International House Walk and is supposed to show how much of our trash can be recycled.

At 11:00 AM the non-profit the Equinox Center is releasing its annual Quality of Life Dashboard. It shows a bunch of environmental info for San Diego like water quality and consumption, transportation and land use.

At noon Supervisor Greg Cox is starting this year’s mosquito eradication campaign with the unveiling of a new app for your smartphone devoted to tracking the West Nile virus.

And finally at 7:00 tonight San Diego Unified School District is giving a talk about how to support our kids so they can successes at school.

A 22-year-old man is dead and the driver the truck that hit him is on the loose. At around 10:10 last night the victim was hit by the box truck and according to the CHP the truck slowed down but then took off. Witnesses say the truck was a white box truck like the kind that people rent to move. It’ll have front-end damage and made a loud rattling noise. Anyone with any info should call 760-757-1675

San Diego’s trash is the topic for the inaugural Zero Waste Symposium. Several environmental groups are getting together this morning at 8:30 to talk about how to divert all waste from our landfills by 2040.

San Diego County Board of Supervisors is meeting this morning at 9:00 about life science industry in San Diego County and a possible eight percent pay raise for Deputy Sheriffs.

Also at 9:00 AM the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners is getting together to talk about improving the port and maintenance.

San Diego City Council is meeting at 10:00 AM and on the agenda are: construction plans for a new park in Horton Plaza, changing council rules for ballot proposals, and honoring Francis Parker School’s volleyball team.

OK this is your editorial alert…

Depending on grade level it can cost over $27,000 a year to send your kid to Francis Parker School. My question is … who is affecting surprise that the parents of kids who attend a super expensive private school would the political slash financial clout to get the city council to honor their kid’s volleyball team? Now if these kids oh i don’t know fed thousands of hungry people then yea honor them … but playing volleyball real good?? Seriously??

At noon District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and County Supervisor Dianne Jacob are presenting San Diego County’s Methamphetamine Report Card.

And finally tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is meeting about possible new charter schools and funding charter school facilities.

Over 800 firefighters are battling the Chariot Fire this morning. The fire started just before 1:00 Sunday afternoon and at last reporting has burned over 2500 acres and is 20 percent contained. Several campgrounds and some residents have been evacuated and the American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine. CAL Fire will update us as soon the sun comes up.

Today many of the holiday weekend partiers that got tickets for things like drinking in public or urinating in public can work of their tickets in San Diego’s Instant Justice program. In lieu of paying what could be hundreds of dollars in fines those with certain minor infractions can bring $40 cast to the Pacific Beach Shore Club and pick up trash all across San Diego’s beaches. Last year over 100 offenders completed nearly 550 hours of work.

San Diego’s City Council is meeting today. First this morning at 9:00 the Audit Committee is talking about proposed audits this year. Then this afternoon at 2:00 the whole council is meeting and will talk about parking restrictions on oversized vehicles and the cities Real Estate Assets Department performance.

In honor of the 19-firefighters killed fighting the Yarnell Hill fire last week the U.S. Honor Flag will arrive at San Diego’s International Airport at 11:40 AM and then be escorted by San Diego Police officers to Phoenix. The U.S. Honor Flag began when Chris Heisler brought the flag to ground zero just after 9/11. Now it makes its way around the country honoring our heroes.

San Diego’s first Red Flag Warning of the season is in effect. A dangerous weather cocktail of gusty winds, low humidity, and high temperatures are why the National Weather Service in San Diego issued the warning. The warning is in effect until 5:00 PM Friday.

San Diego County’s Health and Human Services is investigating two confirmed and two possible cases of meningococcal disease. Commonly known as meningitis. A 22-year-old man hospitalized on April 9th died from the disses and a 47-year-old man is still in the hospital. The disease is spread through close contact like sharing a drinking glass or kissing. Symptoms include fever, headache, lethargy, stiff neck and a rash. Health Officials say if you’ve had close contact with an infected person to seek medical treatment.

This morning at 6am Goodwill Industries and Kaiser Permantente are hosting an e-waste recycling event. If you have any old electronics you can take them to 4405 Vandever Ave.

At 10:00 AM University of California at San Diego students are going to sort through a thousand pounds of trash to show how most garbage still has many things in it that can be recycled.

And at 1:00 PM in Bonita Cove the San Diego Triathlon is having its pre-race expo. No word yet on any enhanced security because of the Boston Marathon bombing. The woman’s race is on Friday and the men Saturday.
