At 9:00 AM in San Diego’s downtown courthouse 85-year-old Joseph Gotell is scheduled to be sentenced this morning for shooting and killing his wife in a dramatic Gaslamp District confrontation.

The Surfrider Foundation is hosting a morning after the night before beach cleanup this morning at 9:00. Volunteers are getting together at many San Diego County beaches to clean up the mess from yesterday’s Fourth of July festivities. In Oceanside they are meeting at the South Harbor Jetty on Harbor Drive, in San Diego they are getting together at the Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, Belmont Park in Mission Beach, and under Ocean Beach’s Pier.


This afternoon at 2:00 the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is celebrating its 40th Fan Favorite Film Festival. They are screening nine of their best IMAX movies starting with the movie “Hubble”


And finally tonight at Qualcomm Stadium the U.S. men’s national soccer team goes up against Guatemala.

This morning at ten thirty San Diego gets a new mayor. Congressman Bob Filner will be inaugurated and become the thirty-eighth mayor and the first Democratic mayor since the nineteen eighties.

Two men found guilty of several high-risk robberies will be sentenced today. Robert Chavira and Ryan Alan McKnight were convicted of the robberies two of them were daylight take-over style in very busy stores.

A couple accused of sexually abusing a twelve year old girl will be arraigned this afternoon at one thirty. Authorities believe Inez Marinez and Marciel Garcia Hernandez smuggled the girl, a Mexican national, into the state with the promise of a better life then they abused her.

Tijuana’s soccer team wins the Mexican premier league championship. The Xoloitzcuiles de Caliente or “Los Xolos” beat Toluca two to zero in an away match to become the Mexican champions. Not bad for a team that was bumped up to the country’s highest league only eighteen months ago.
