Arraignment for the man accused of beating a prominent San Diego architect to death is this afternoon. 31-year-old Higinio Soriano Salgado allegedly beat 56-year-old Grahm Downes to death at a house party. Salgado is being held without bail pending his arraignment.

Preliminary hearing begins today for the 7th and 8th grade English teacher accused of brining a loaded gun to work following the Sandy Hook shooting. 41-year-old Ned Carter Walker allegedly brought a 38 caliber pistol and a knife onto school grounds. He is looking at up to 5-years in prison if convicted.

At 10 Am San Diego’s City Council will talk about what it’s going to spend the new $5.5 million budget surplus on. One is spending $250,000 to keep a shelter for homeless veterans open until July 7th. The 150 bed shelter normally closes this time of year but with a new budget surplus announced Mayor Bob Filner wants to keep it and another shelter open longer. The other big ticket item is a $500,000 payment to end litigation of a parochial schools expansion plans.

Down in Southern San Diego County the Chula Vista City Council is considering a resolution in support of comprehensive immigration reform.

Two final Earth Day events today at noon. First the County of San Diego is collecting recyclables and demonstrating composting at the County Operations Center 5520 Overland Ave. Second the University of San Diego is announcing its plans to become a “Zero Waste” campus at the Student Life Pavilion on campus.

Tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is thinking about starting a $1.9 million dollar summer school program for at-rick-kids. The proposed four-week program is for kids in first, third, and eighth grade that are in danger of being held back.

On this day 50-year-ago President John F Kennedy gave the commencement speech at San Diego State University. The university is memorializing it today with a symposium about the speech at 12:30 PM in the Alumi Center

And tonight at 6:30 the Environmental Health Coalition is hosting its 2013 awards event. This year they are honoring advancements in children’s health.

[trib_ndn vid=24042831]SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Unified School District announced Friday it’s joining forces with the San Diego Police Department to link security camera systems and increase cameras in schools.

“We look at a complement of security staff and training, as well as security camera to provide each school with what it needs,” said SDUSD police Chief Ruben Littlejohn.

A grant will allow the district to have around 1200 cameras installed by July 2013.

“Now, I know who I’m looking for whether I’m on route or when I get on scene,” said SDPD Assistant Chief Boyd Long. “These cameras will provide us with real time information as the officer’s responding.”

Littlejohn also responded to the NRA’s statement of an armed police officer at every school, the chief called the idea unnecessary.

At 6:30 a walk memorializing each victim of the Sandy Hook tragedy will begin at the Escondido City Hall. For you out of towners Escondido is a city in the North Eastern part of San Diego County. The walk will be 27-minutes long, one minute for each victim. Participants will wear green and white, the Sandy Hook school colors.

This morning the United African-American Ministerial Action Council along with the District Attorney will host a Gun for Gift Card exchange. People will receive $50 for each rifle and shotgun and $100 for hand guns and assault weapons.

No questions asked.

And today just in time for Christmas the Coast Guard Cutter Sherman will return to San Diego. The Sherman and its crew spent 85-days patrolling the Bering Sea enforcing fishing laws and performing rescue missions.

Chief Petty Officer Shane Melott, says quote “It’s pretty amazing … knowing that no one else in my family, beside my grandfather, has ever been there,”

The Sandy Hood tragedy is sparking another gun control debate and its hitting home in San Diego.

Fears of potential new gun regulations are boosting sales for San Diego gun dealers. According to a KSWB report sales have gone up as much as forty percent. In the report by Sharon Chen a gun shop owner says “People who are predisposed to do evil things will find a way to do it … Let’s not look to fix blame on an inanimate object.”

And today several organizations are giving away toys and food to San Diego’s needy.

In separate events the San Diego Labor Council, United Way, Salvation Army, and Inmates from the Raymond J Donovan Correctional Facility are all giving to those in need.

And another cold front is making its way into San Diego County today. It will bring strong winds later today along with rain on the coast and snow in the mountains.

The Newtown tragedy is hitting home for San Diegans

According to the local A-B-C affiliate one of the victims has local ties. 6-year-old Avielle Richman and her family moved to Newtown last year from San Diego. According to the Connecticut Post one of her favorite things was to ride horses in her pink cowboy boots.

Her funeral is set for Tuesday.

Also … In the wake of the heartbreak at Sandy Hook San Diego’s Mayor, Chief of Police, school officials, and mental health experts are meeting to discuss campus safety. The meeting begins at 9 AM.

In much lighter news a cold front is moving into San Diego.

We are again expecting rain along the coast and snow in our mountains.
