The USS Vandergrift and about 200 sailors are leaving San Diego this morning after 7:45. The four-hundred-53-foot-long guided-missile frigate is going to fight drug trafficking along the Central American coast.

In court today two sentencings of note, both in San Diego’s courthouse.

First at 9:30 this morning Ramon Heredia will be sentenced for smashing a beer bottle over the head of another man while tailgating at Chargers versus Cowboys game. It was all caught on video and uploaded to YouTube.

Then at 1:30 this afternoon Johnnie Edwards and Mautofu Maiava will hear their fates for using a gun to rob several people outside a house party.

This morning at 9:00 San Diego Sheriff’s officials are talking to the press about an undercover sting they did that went after people who sold drugs over the internet.

Also at 9:00 San Diego Police, Coast Guard personnel, Urban Corps members and City workers are helping World War Two veteran Jess Busco clean up his home in City Heights.

The Board of Directors from the San Diego Association of Governments or SANDAG is talking about the trolley expansion projects at 10:00 AM.

Then at 1:00 this afternoon SANDAG is presenting a new mobile app that’ll give commuters real-time traffic cameras, toll price along with a bunch of other commuter friendly info.

It’s the first of its kind in the nation.

Starting at 10:00 AM Payless ShoeSource is giving about 200 kids new free summer shoes. The first 50 kids are clients of the child abuse prevention agency. The kids will be able to pick them out at Payless’s all over San Diego County.

Tonight at 6:00 the Surfrider Foundation of San Diego County is having its 14th annual art gala. It’s their biggest fundraiser of the year.

And finally at 6:30 the charity Mama’s Kitchen is hosting its 23rd annual Mother’s Day benefit dinner at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla.

California authorities have issued an Amber Alert for a 14-year-old girl thought to abducted by a 19-year-old man. Washington State Police say that Elizabeth Romero was kidnapped last Wednesday (that’s the fourth) by Eduardo Flores-Rosalas. He was last seen driving an early 2000’s dark green Ford Escape. Official believe the pair may be headed to Mexico through California. If you see Romeo or Flores-Rosalas call 911 or Kennewick Washington Police at 509-628-0333.

A winter storm watch is in effect for San Diego County’s mountains starting tonight and into tomorrow. A low pressure system is coming down from the North and will bring heavy snowfall along with strong gusty winds at elevations as low as 3000 feet.

At 9:00 this morning in San Diego’s downtown courthouse Jorge Sillas and Victor Gonzalez are scheduled to be sentenced for their part in a murder-for-hire plot connected to the infamous Arellano Felix drug cartel.

At 10:00 AM the San Diego Association of Governments Board of Directors is talking about how varying land use scenarios can reduce greenhouse emissions.

Marines and Sailors are getting free Christmas trees this morning. Trees for Troops is giving will give away 800 trees at Camp Pendleton at 9:00 AM.

And finally … Balboa Park’s 35th annual “December Nights” festival kicks off today at 3:00 PM.

This morning at 9:00 Arne Duncan the United States Secretary of Education will finish his fourth annual “Strong Start, Bright Future” back-to-school bus tour at Castle Park Middle School. Duncan and several of the Department of Education top officials began this tour in Santa Fe New Mexico and have been all across the South West. The tour is meant to highlight the importance of high quality educational opportunities and address immigration reform’s impact on education.

San Diego County’s regional growth forecast and transportation is on the agenda this morning for the San Diego Association of Governments Board of Directors this morning at 10:00.

Preparing for disasters and hands-on CPT training is all happening this morning at 10:00 AM at the San Diego headquarters of the American Red Cross.

At 10:45 this morning Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth will help nurture emerging musical talent at the sixth annual San Diego Music Thing.

And finally … the 49th annual San Diego Bayfair hydroplane races get underway starting at 7:45 AM. Today the teams can begin training on the course with the races over the weekend finishing Sunday afternoon with the big finally race. Best viewing is from Vacation Island, Ski Beach, Crown Point Shores, and Fiesta Island.

In Vista’s courthouse the parolee accused of beating his girlfriend then kidnapping the couple’s 5-month-old child will be arraigned this afternoon. 42-year-old Kenneth Wayne Welch is being charged with Child endangerment, domestic violence, assault, attempted murder, evading police, and violating the terms of his parole.

Today is National Dump the Pump Day. There are events happening all over the county today. The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is celebrating at two major transit centers. They will be at Old Town Transit Center and the Escondido Transit Center at 6:30 this morning thanking commuters for using public transport.

Then this evening SANDAG is hosting another public workshop for the Rose Creek Bikeway Project. This project would fill in a 2-mile gap in the regional bike network.

San Diego County will start its annual “Cool Zones” program at 2:00 this afternoon at La Mesa’s Adult Enrichment Center. The program provides over 100 air-conditioned hangouts for senior citizens to beat San Diego’s oppressive summer heat.

A winning Powerball ticket was sold at the Excalibur Liquor store in La Mesa. The ticket got five numbers (but not the Powerball number) and is worth over 943,000 dollars. Powerball is played in 43-state and the odds of matching five numbers is about 1 in 175 million.

The price of gas keeps going up. Yesterday was the largest jump since May 14 and the price of gas has gone up four times in five days. The average price of a gallon of regular gas is now $3.97.

Firefighters are training for wild fires in Chula Vista’s back country. Beginning at 9:00 AM Chula Vista Fire Department will host multiple fire agencies in a live fire training exercises. Several acres will be burned; firefighters on the ground and in the air will train on fighting them. So if you see smoke in South East Chula Vista don’t panic

At 4:00 this afternoon San Diego Unified School District is celebrating the retirement of many of its teachers and staff including Superintendent Bill Kowba.

San Diego Association of Governments is busy this evening. First at 5:30 tonight SANDAG is hosting an open house about the Mid-City Rapid Bus Project. This will be a new express route from San Diego State University to downtown San Diego. At 6:00 tonight other representatives of SANDAG will be in Escondido taking public input of a bunch of topics: from land use to climate change to the environment.

This morning at the South Bay YMCA at 9:00 San Diego County official will remind parents about being safe at the pool and beach in the summer time.

At 10:00 the first applications for $500,000 dollars in grants from the county for enhancement projects is being reviewed by a new panel. For the first time the panel will give their grant recommendations to Supervisor Dave Roberts. In the past these grants have been seen as a way for supervisors to fund pet projects, and that’s why the panel was created.

And finally at 8:45 AM at LEGOLAND in Carlsbad is the unveiling of a life sized Lego Star Wars X-Wing Fighter. It took 32 builders 17000 hours to assemble the 43-foot-long 11-foot-tall 46 thousand pound model out of about 5 million Legos. Nerds everywhere are shivering with excitement.

A bank robbery erupts into gunfire and one suspect is still on the loose. Late afternoon Tuesday two suspects … one man and one woman … tried to rob a Wells Fargo bank in the San Diego suburb of University City when a bank guard confronted them. Reportedly the man was shot but able to run away hopping into a waiting car.

According to a KSWB FOX5 report by Kristy Wolski a witness snapped a cell phone picture of the injured robber as he ran to the get-a-way car. The driver and injured suspect were able to flee and evade police; however the injured suspect was dropped off at Sharp Memorial Hospital some time later. The woman was arrested on scene and taken to the hospital, the extent of her injuries is not known at this time. So to sum up … the two robbers are under arrest and in the hospital, one with a gunshot wound to his chest, and the get-a-way driver is still on the loose.

Lost going on for San Diego’s Politicos today.

First the San Diego City Council is meeting today and talking about a couple of hot topics. In the morning they are talking about the Tourism Marketing District … remember when the mayor was refusing to release funds to pay the TMD. Then in the afternoon they are listing to presentations about the planning for the Balboa Park centennial celebration.

San Diego’s County Board of Supervisors is continuing its budget meetings this morning at 9:00. In-home health care advocates are slated to speak. The county does pay for some in-home health care and it’s often on the chopping block.

Then at 9:30 the Civic San Diego Board of Directors is talking about a new project that could provide over 200 affordable housing units.

At 4:00 PM San Diego Association of Governments (or SANDAG) is meeting about extending the trolley to La Jolla.

Then at 5:30 PM SANDAG is meeting in San Marcos about extending rail service from San Marcos to Oceanside.

And at 8:00 PM the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority is celebrating the restarting of nonstop flights from Miami to San Diego.

This morning at 10:00 Republican State Senator Joel Anderson is talking to the press about legislation he’s supporting that would fund some school safety programs.

And at 10:30 AM an Army doctor is announcing a new lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America for sexual abuse.

This afternoon at 1:30 two men accused of selling meth at a Mission Bay Sports Center, that hosts youth camps, will be arraigned in San Diego’s downtown courthouse. 32-year-old Spencer Nicholas Edmonds and 41-year-old Vincent Manuel Garcia are accused of dealing meth along with seven other people. There bail is set at $500,000

Also at 1:30 half of a pair accused of stealing computer equipment from an elementary school will be arraigned in El Cajon’s courthouse today.

Regional politicos will be busy today.

First at 9:00 AM the San Diego County Board of Supervisors is listening to the public about their proposed 4 point 97 billion dollar budget. The new budget increases spending by two and half percent.

And this afternoon at 2:00 the San Diego City Council votes on its 2 point 75 billion dollar spending plan. The new plan includes revisions from the Mayor and a five-year labor agreement.

Then this evening at 5:30 the San Diego Association of Governments, or SANDAG, is talking about construction for the Mid-City Bus Route and trolley expansion to La Jolla.

This morning at 10:45 Democratic Congressman Scott Peters is announcing he’s going to donate eight percent of his monthly income to the non-profit Senior Community Centers. Every month $1,300 will go to the non-profit that helps feed San Diego’s senior citizens. That means he make $195,000 a year

This afternoon starting at 1:00 thousands of San Diego Unified School District high school students are graduating.

And finally tonight at 6:30 at the Birch Aquarium Charlie Kennel the former Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography is giving a talk about the future of manned space travel. Kennel is now the chairman of the National Academies Space Studies Board.
