AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for January 27, 2014

San Diego’s City Council has a lot on its plate today. First this afternoon at 2:00 they are meeting about calling primary elections for the even numbered council districts, a ballot measure, and capital improvements… That means spending some money keeping things like the city’s roads maintained. Then at 6:00 tonight the council is meeting about the city charter. They want to make December 10th Inauguration Day. Currently Inauguration Day is 27-34 days after the election. It’s thought by officials that setting it to December 10th will give more constancy to the length of terms.

Neel Kashkari, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, is in San Diego today. He’s talking to supporters at the Ballast Point Brewing Company at 11:00 AM. 40-year-old Kashkari was an assistant secretary of the treasury for President George W. Bush.

It’s still way early in the California gubernatorial process. It’ll be interesting to see who the Republicans end up putting forward.

At 9:00 AM Sean Patrick Banks is in court. He’s accused of raping two women, one of which he met through a Christian dating web site. Today he’s in court for what’s called a “conditional exam”. This is the questioning of a witness that is a minor. I want to stress that we do not know how this minor is involved, or what the minor saw and heard. However that should all be made clear this morning in El Cajon’s courthouse.

And finally late this afternoon at 4:30 the San Diego Unified School District is telling parents about California’s new funding formula and how their schools and kids will be affected.

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with Greenpeace on board the Rainbow Warrior

Listen above or on iTunes HERE

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with me Matthew Bowler and San Diego’s Political Professor Ric Epps

This time we are on board the official Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior II.

The original was blown up by the French equivalent to the CIA. So Greenpeace just built another one. This one has a very interesting and avant garde design. The ship has a traditional engine, an electric engine, and two sails. However the sails don’t fly from a traditional mast. Greenpeace is hopping the new design they’re using will work as a proof of concept showing cargo ship builders that using sails are viable for cargo vessels. It’s a very cool and interesting design defiantly worth a serious look.

We talked to her Captain Capitan Joel Stewart

And Green Pease Oceans Campaigner Casson Trenor.

It was a fascinating hour.

We talked about the Greenpeace ship that was seized by the Russian military and the 30 activists that were arrested. We talked about one ironic aspect to global warming and Arctic oil drilling. We talked about Bumble Bee Tuna and read parts of a letter from the San Diego Bumble Bee CEO.

Of course I know you’ve got an opinion and your dyeing to share it.

Jump on your soapbox by jumping on ours call (619) 663-4531 and leaving use a message … ask a question … make your point and maybe we’ll use it in our next BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast

And now the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with special guests from Greenpeace.

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for November 19, 2013

Today is Election Day in San Diego.

Since Bob Filner was removed from office for sexual harassment San Diego has had interim mayor Todd Gloria at the helm. If no single candidate wins 51 percent of the vote there will be a runoff election in the spring. Most likely that is what will happen.

The top candidates are

First: Councilman David Alvarez. He is a Democrat and has the official party endorsement

Second: Councilman Kevin Faulconer. Faulconer is the official Republican Party enforced candidate.

Third: Nathan Fletcher. Nathan has the Police Officer’s Association and Firefighter Union endorsement.

Forth: Mike Aguirre. Mike is the former City Attorney

In the last poll Faulconer was leading with Fletcher and Alvarez both more or less tied for second.

Polls open at 7:00 AM and first numbers will come from the Registrar of Voters at 8:00 PM when the polls close. According to the Registrar 37% of eligible voters have already voted.

I sat down with each of the top three candidates for about an hour. If you want to learn more about where they are coming from, gain some insight into who they are, what they want to do with the city, and why they want to be mayor check out the Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast. Go to BowlersDesk.com and click on the Political Podcast tab.

There are a few other things of note going on today.

San Diego’s Board of Port Commissioners is meeting this afternoon at 1:00 about the Living Coast Discovery Center’s long term plan and possibly raising the rates for parking meters along the coast.

And finally tonight at 5:00 what to do with a 22 million dollar state grant is on the agenda for the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast Guns 9-22-13

Listen above or get it at the BowlersDesk.com iTunes page HERE.

Hello and welcome to this special BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast.

This week Ric Epps and I tackled the tough issue of gun control.

No matter what side of the gun debate you fall on everyone needs to be at the table on this. Both fervent pro gun activists and anti gun activists.

We went out to a pro-second amendment rally in east San Diego County. The Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club hosted the rally. They let anyone that wanted to come out and shoot guns, under the supervision of a club member of course.

We sat down with California State Assemblyman Brian Jones. Brian is a Republican from the 51st assembly district, that’s east San Diego County from Santee out to the Imperial County line. One of the platforms in his campaign was gun ownership. He is a fervent supporter of it. He opposes any gun registration laws and thinks Americans should be able to buy any kind of gun they want.

Sam Paredes the Executive Director of Gun Owners of California also joined us. Sam is as fervently pro-gun as the Assemblyman.

Now for the sake of full disclosure you need to know I am not what could be called pro-gun. I do not believe that you should be able to buy a 50-caliber car mounted machine gun. However I think there are responsible gun owners’ out there. And like most Americans I fall in the grey space between this issue.

Ric and I hope that this is the beginning of a dialog about the issue. Everyone needs to be at the table in a genuine and sincere way on this issue. We just started with the pro-gun people and hope to bring you a Political Podcast with anti-gun activists soon.

This is a hot topic and I’m sure you’ll want to hop on your soapbox over it. So do that by hopping on ours. Call 619-663-4531 leave a message, ask a question, and take part in the discussion. Everyone needs to be at the table.

And now gun control on the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast.

Enjoy

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for September 4, 2013

At 10:00 Councilman Kevin Faulconer will announce his decision to run or not for San Diego Mayor. Yesterday both congressional candidate Carl DeMaio and councilman slash interim mayor Todd Gloria both bowed out. Everyone expects Faulconer to jump into the race with the support of San Diego’s Republican Party. The other two major names in the race are Nathan Fletcher and Mike Aguirre both Democrats. Aguirre said he will run on the FOX5 Morning News but is going to make his official announcement this afternoon.

It’ll be interesting to see if having two Democrats on the ballot will make it easier for Faulconer a Republican

The election is November 19th and if no single candidate get more that 50 percent of the votes the top two will have a run off.

At 8:00 AM the San Diego County Taxpayers Association is meeting for a breakfast forum and on the agenda California’s controversial Proposition 13. Prop 13 affects property tax rules. It makes it so that your tax burden is based on the value of the property at the time you buy your house. Because schools get their funding from property tax this that means in older neighborhoods the schools get less funding. However it also means that people who have lived in their homes for a long time won’t have to worry about having their taxes raised beyond their ability to pay.

In a related story the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education unanimously approved restoring the concessions that district employees made last year. The concessions were made to help with the district’s budget shortfall. But now the School Board thinks the money will be there and they are giving teachers a retroactive pay raise of 2%.

Today is the last day for this season’s horse races at the Del Mar Racetrack. First post is at 2:00 PM

And finally tonight at 6:00 the San Diego Chargers Girls will unveil this year’s swimsuit calendar. Some of the profits from the sale of the calendar will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.
