Three people are under arrest and accused of using an elaborate smuggling tunnel along the San Diego / Tijuana border to run drugs. The tunnel ran from one non-descript warehouse in Tijuana across the American/Mexican border to another non-descript warehouse in the community of Otay Mesa. It is about 20 meters underground and runs about 200 meters long and was equipped with a rail system and ventilation. Along with the three arrests authorities also seized 325 pounds of cocaine and eight tons of marijuana.

This morning at 8:30 in El Cajon’s courthouse 23-year-old April Carole Thompson will be sentenced for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Thompson was drunk when she drove the wrong way on highway 52 slamming head on into another car killing 25-year-old Jayme Alan Midlam. Thompson is facing 10-years in prison.

Today at 1:30 PM in San Diego’s downtown courthouse Daryl Ray Cody will be arraigned and accused of obstructing a peace officer and possessing a controlled substance. A Sheriff’s Deputy was trying to evict Cody from a downtown apartment. Authorities say Cody refused to follow orders then the Deputy says he saw what he thought was a gun barrel and fired at Cody, shooting Cody in the leg. Turned out to be a three foot long plastic tube.

Another immigration reform protest is set to happen at Representative Darrell Issa’s Vista office today at 11:00 AM. Yesterday’s was anti-immigration reform and today is pro-immigration reform. San Diego Faith Leaders and dream act atavists will give Issa’s office new polling data that they say shows that Americans want immigration reform.

At the San Diego Naval Base at 9:15 this morning the U.S.S. Thach will be decommissioned after 30 years of service. Commander Hans Lynch proudly says that the Thach and her crew accomplished a lot in her long career “From conducting counter-narcotics operations to maintaining freedom on the high seas, the ship has been through a lot”.

And finally today at 12:30 this afternoon Veterans are replacing 50 worn out flags at the Avenue of Flags at the Miramar National Cemetery.

Close to 230 Camp Pendleton residents are allowed back into their homes today after officials evacuated them because of a fire. The weekend blaze burned 1500 acres and is 15 percent contained as of Sunday afternoon.

San Diego County courts are very busy today with six arraignments on the schedule worth talking about.

First this morning at 8:30 in Vista Superior Court 61-year-old Michael Vilkin will be arraigned and accused of shooting his neighbor over a landscaping dispute.

Then the next four arraignments that matter will all be at 1:30 in San Diego Courthouse’s Department 12

Ghazal Mansury will be arraigned and accused of killing her 79-year-old mother

Georgette Cramer Cervantes will be accused of murdering a guy she was dating then engaging in a 7-hour -long swat stand off

54-year-old Gregory Eagles … a youth ice hockey coach … will be accused of trying to buy and sell child porn

An Orange County man will be arraigned and accused of smashing a bottle over the head of another man in the parking lot of Qualcomm stadium just after a Chargers / Cowboys game. The whole fight was caught on someone’s cell phone and put on youtube.

And the last arraignment of note today will be in Chula Vista’s courthouse … John Kinloch and elementary school teacher will be accused of molesting five kids and having child porn.

San Diego’s City Council is meeting today. First this morning at 9:00 the Audit Committee is going to talk about problems associated with “Managed Competition”. A new audit of the Publishing Services says that the workload was artificially inflated witch prompted bidders to ask for more money than they may have really needed to do the projects. Publishing Services is the first city department to use “Managed Competition”. Then in the afternoon the council will talk about a proposed development in Otay Mesa’s Brown Field.

And finally the USS Higgins and its crew of 250 come home to San Diego this morning after a lengthy deployment…The guided-missile destroyer served in the Western Pacific and Middle East.

Today is the last day to file your papers to run for mayor of San Diego. So if you have your 200 signatures get yourself down to the city clerk’s office before 5:00 PM and get on the ballot. This afternoon at 3:15 candidates will take the stage at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter for the first San Diego Mayoral debate. The debate is part of the 2013 California Asian Business Summit. Former City Attorney Mike Aguirre, Councilman David Alvarez, and Councilman Kevin Faulconer are slated to participate. Candidate Nathan Fletcher is speaking at the summit but will not be taking part in the debate.

There is a lot happing in San Diego’s downtown courthouse this morning.

Three sentencing’s all at 9:00 AM

Matthew Motsenbocker is being sentenced for assault charges related to him dragging a U.S. Marshal down the street. All while trying to drive away after he was stopped for a warrant.

Jorge Sillas and Victor Gonzalez pleaded guilty to an Arellano Felix drug cartel murder for hire plot.

And Joe Bean pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine for sale. He was part of a nine person crew meth ring that was being run out of the Mission Bay Sports Center.

Then in San Diego’s downtown courthouse at 1:30 this afternoon Hans Petersen is being arraigned for two shooting in two different La Jolla homes hours apart.

In Chula Vista’s courthouse at 1:30 Thomas Garrett a retired firefighter and former commodore of the Coronado Yacht Club will be sentenced for molesting a neighbor girl.

And in federal court Leonard Glenn Francis the head of a multinational defense-contracting firm will have a detention hearing related to bribery charges.

At Naval Base San Diego at 12:45 this afternoon three destroyers will be named after three San Diego naval heroes. The new names will be the USS John Finn, USS Ralph Johnson, and USS Rafael Peralta. Family from all three will be in attendance.

One of San Diego’s Chief Deputy City Attorney’s Joe Cordileone will be awarded the Silver Star this morning at 7:45. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus is giving him the award for his actions during the Vietnam War in 1967.

And finally at 6:00 tonight the San Diego Beer Festival is raising money for cancer research. The fundraiser will have over 100 craft beers on tap.

The parade of sexual harassment accusers continues for San Diego Mayor Bob Filner.

In an interview with KPBS a third woman came forward yesterday. Morgan Rose a psychologist for San Diego Unified School District says that the then congressman tried to kiss her during a meeting.

According to the KPBS story Rose started an organization to help improve child “well-being”. Rose goes on to say that she was trying to raise the groups profile and was hoping for the congressman’s help. She claims he tried repeatedly to kiss her while at a Marie Calendars across the street from his office in January of 2009.

Rose is the third woman to come forward in under a week making sexual harassment allegation against the Mayor.

Guided missile frigate USS Rentz is deploying today to help stop the flow of drugs from South and Central America into the United States. Originally the Rentz was supposed to deploy in April but because of the budget sequestration the deployment was delayed until today.

Today at 11:00 AM San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System is starting construction on the trolley system. All of the stations from San Ysidro to Old Town are being remodeled to accommodate our new low-rise trolleys. This makes it easier and quicker to get on and off the trolley because you don’t have to step up and disabled passengers in wheel chairs can just roll right on. The construction is being kicked off with a press conference at 11:00 AM.

Tonight 6:30 two major Democratic groups are getting together to talk about sexual harassment

First members of the San Diego Democrats for Equality are meeting in private to talk specifically about the mayor and his sexual harassment allegations at the Joyce Beers Community Center.

Then also at 6:30 the Central Committee for the San Diego County Democratic Party is talking about the local party’s official position on sexual harassment. They are meeting at party headquarters at 8340 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

And finally this morning at 9:30 Chargers open up their training camp to the public. It’s free and at Charger Park at 4020 Murphy Canyon Road.

There is a lot going on in court today

First in San Diego’s Courthouse at 8:30 36-year-old Geronimo Polina and 33-year-old Eduardo Macias will be sentenced for attempting to carry out a Mexican Mafia “hit” in prison. While in Donovan State Prison the pair conspired to kill a inmate

Also at 8:30 in San Diego 22-year-old Whitney Holman is being arraigned. She is accused of trying to drown her 9-month-old baby in the bathtub.

This afternoon at 1:30 in El Cajon’s courthouse, Casy Tschida she’s the woman accused of murdering a woman while the victim walked home from a Lemon Grove Bar.

In Chula Vista at 1:30 Erica Braswell will be sentenced for drunk driving, leading police on a chase, all with her two kids in car.

Then at 1:30 this afternoon in Vista’s courthouse the sentencing for Perry Allen. Allen pleaded guilty to burglarizing nine rooms at the up-scale La Costa resort.

Local politicos have a lot on their plates today too

First San Diego’s City Council is meeting at 10:00 am and expected to override a Mayoral veto. The Mayor vetoed a waiver given to a Kearny Mesa apartment complex developer. This will be the third time one of Mayor Filner’s vetoes is overridden by the council.

This morning at 9:00 AM the San Diego County Board of Supervisors is continuing its budget meetings.

This afternoon at 1:00 the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners is talking about expanding the National City Marine Terminal, a new R-V park in National City, dredging the bay, and their budget for next year.

Both El Cajon and Chula Vista’s City Council are examining their respectively proposed budgets this afternoon

And at 10:00 AM San Diego Gas and Electric is talking to the press about this summer’s power supply.

And finally beginning today is 17-days of amphibious training for the Navy Third Fleet and 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. The multi-national training includes participants from Canada, Japan and New Zealand. In a press release the Navy says “The exercise will test staffs in the planning and execution of amphibious operations in a series of live training events.”

This morning at 10:00 AM notorious Mexican cartel leader Eduardo Arellano Felix is expected to plead guilty in San Diego’s federal court. Eduardo is one of the four brothers that ran the Arellano Felix Organization or A-F-O. The 56-year-old is charged with money laundering, racketeering, drug trafficking, and he is believed to be responsible for at least three murders. Benjamin Arellano-Felix and Francisco Javier Arellano-Felix are in American prisons serving time for racketeering, drug trafficking and money laundering. One of the brothers … Francisco Rafael Arellano-Felix … is back in Mexico after he was imprisoned in the United States for six-years on cocaine charges.

This morning is the fifth annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast. San Diego’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Community Center is hosting the event. They will honor Oregon’s former Governor Barbara Roberts and writer Dustin Lance Black.

The Navy is getting 47 new officers today. Members of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps will get their commissions in a ceremony at the University of San Diego’s Jenny Craig Pavilion at 11 AM.

Two fun things to do tonight…First at 5:00 PM the San Diego Jazz Festival starts its three-day run at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

And finally tonight also at 5:00 the Helen Woodward Animal Center is hosting its Second Annual Puppy Prom. Puppies will compete in a Best Dressed King and Queen competition.

Police are on the lookout for an armed man that tried to kidnap a San Diego State University student over the weekend. According to authorities the suspect… armed with a black handgun … tried to kidnap a 19-year-old girl but the young woman turned and ran away escaping her attacker. He is described as a white man, 30’s or 40’s, clean shaven, about 6-feet tall, 180-pounds, with short blond hair, blue eyes, wearing rectangular framed glasses, jeans, blue T-shirt, a tan jacket. Anyone with any info should call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

San Diego’s Board of Education is going to take up the Twerking video controversy today. 3 male high school students of color and 28 white female high school students were suspended for making a video in which the young ladies were performing the provocative dance. Today the school board is going to talk about the severity of the sentence and the public can comment as well. Public comment will be held at some time after 2:00 pm at the Eugene Brucker Education Center, Room 2249, 4100 Normal St.

And in other government today both San Diego’s City Council and the County Board of Supervisors are meeting.

The Council is talking about changing some of its rules for outdoor dining and letting microbreweries have restaurants.

The Board is talking about incentive programs for people that put solar panels at their homes.

Sailors and Marines in the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group return from an eight-month deployment today. While on deployment the group worked with many countries including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates. Coming into port are the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu, the amphibious transport dock USS Green Bay, and amphibious dock landing USS Rushmore.

Conversely this afternoon at 1:00 the amphibious landing ship USS Pearl Harbor is deploying for four-months. They are slated to help with humanitarian missions in countries like Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Tonga.

Fire Danger in San Diego. Hot temperatures, high winds, and low humidity prompt the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for Southern California. Temperatures are expected to hit upwards of 90 degrees today with humidity falling below 10 percent. At this point the Red Flag Warning will be in effect until 6:00 PM Friday.

A man accused of raping women he met through the dating web site Christian Mingle is going to be in court today. The preliminary hearing for 37-year-old Sean Patrick Banks starts at 8:40 this morning in El Cajon.

Today at 10:00 AM a new Navy helicopter squadron is being created. The Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 35 … the Magicians … will have both manned and unmanned aircraft. The ceremony will be at Naval Air Station North Island.

Banning the retail sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits is one step closer to becoming law. San Diego City Council’s Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee says yes to the amendment to the municipal code. It now goes to the full City Council for a vote. If it passes businesses will have to prove the pets come from animal shelters to be able to sell them.

Today at 12:15 in the afternoon the Salvation Army and County Supervisor Bill Horn will commemorate the 62nd annual National Day of Prayer at the County Administration Building.

At 1:30 PM in Vista the young woman accused of more than 300 graffiti crimes will be arraigned.

And tonight the education activist group UpforEd is holding a meeting to talk about the proposed budget for the San Diego Unified School District. The meeting starts at 6:30 in the Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress St.

This morning the USS Mobile Bay is returning home to San Diego. The guided-missile cruiser and its 5000 sailors spent their 8-month deployment in the Middle East and Western Pacific attached to the Johns C Stennis Strike Group. Making a brief stop in San Diego with the Mobile Bay is the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis. They are on their way to their home port of Bremerton Washington.

At 11:00 AM today labor leaders, immigrant rights activists, and politicians are talking to the media about their plans for May Day. May Day is the internationally celebrated Labor Day and traditionally a day of pro-labor protests. In San Diego the immigrants’ rights movement has attached itself to this day because of our proximity to the border.

And this afternoon at 1:00 the County of San Diego is going to talk about a joining new program called “Text4Baby”. The statewide wide program sends text messages to pregnant woman and new mothers promoting healthy lifestyles.
