A guided missile cruiser and guided missile destroyer are coming home to Naval Base San Diego this morning after 9:00 AM. The USS Cowpens, the cruiser, and its 400 crew left in September to help with relief efforts in the Philippines following the Typhoon. The destroyer USS Spruance and its 260 member crew left San Diego in October for their maiden deployment. They spent time patrolling the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

This afternoon at 1:30 in San Diego’s courthouse 26-year-old Richard Christopher Butts will hear his fate for kidnapping and sexually assaulting two women in Ocean Beach. The two separate attacks happened with in a seven-month time span.

Butts assaulted a woman in her mid-twenties as she walked home from a friend’s house. Then he kidnapped and raped another woman. In testimony one of his victims says that Butts punched her twice from behind, drug her away and tried to rape her. Witnesses say they heard her screaming quote “Please stop! Don’t do this!” Reportedly Butts will get 30-year to life in prison as part of a plea deal.

This afternoon at 2:00 the San Diego Opera’s Board of Directors is meeting at the Hyatt La Jolla Aventine to try and keep the opera afloat. Then at 4:00 supporters of the opera are hosting a public meeting in the Copper Room of City Hall. Last month the Board of Directors voted to close the Opera saying they just don’t have the money. But then the critics came out saying the Board is paid exuberantly and is plagued with other financial problems that if fixed could keep the opera afloat. Also some performers filed a lawsuit in an attempt to force the opera to the arbitration table over their unpaid contracts.

This morning at 8:30 the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless is releasing its annual Point-In-Time homeless count at a press conference at the United Way’s Murphy Canyon building. Last year they counted 8,879 homeless people (that’s down 7.9% from the year before) 75% were men, 69% had been on the streets for over a year and 15% were veterans. It’ll be interesting to see what changes for this year.

At 10 AM the media is getting to ride in a Vietnam War-era swift boat thanks to the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Veterans that worked on the boats will also be on hand to share their stories.

Allowing drivers to access info that their cars computers collect is what several mechanics and consumer advocates want. They’re talking to the press about that at 10:30 this morning at John’s Automotive Care on Riverdale Street.

At 11:30 AM courageous officers and citizens are being honored by California State Attorney General Kamala Harris.

At noon Washington Middle School is unveiling its new aquatic fitness gear they bought with a $22,000 dollar grant from the Chargers.

And finally this afternoon at 1:00 at the San Diego Firehouse Museum former Fire Capitan Frank Baron is celebrating his 100th birthday. Frank first joined the San Diego fire department in 1941 and served for 25-years.

Two San Diego based destroyers deploy this morning from Naval Base San Diego. The USS Kidd and USS Pinckney will be the home away from home to over 600 sailors for months to come. While on deployment the ships will be training with some of our allies and what the navy calls “theater security cooperation and maritime presence operations”.

San Diego’s County Board of Supervisors is meeting this morning at 9:00 about some new appointments.

Then at noon the Port of San Diego and the homeless charity Alpha Project are signing an agreement with help with our growing homeless population.

A new senior citizen community is breaking ground this afternoon at 12:30 in Chula Vista. The new 156-room community will be called Saint Paul’s Senior Homes and Services.

In court this afternoon at 130 there are two sentencing and two arraignments on the schedule.

Wanda Podgurski is on the docket in San Diego to be sentenced for a frailer to appear. Podgurski was convicted of insurance and disability fraud when she took off and turned up in Mexico. Podgurski was extradited back to the states after she began taunting San Diego’s District Attorney over twitter.

In Vista’s courthouse Pedro Luis Padilla will be sentenced after pleading guilty to many graffiti crimes. Originally Padilla and his 15-year-old accomplice were arrested for more than 400 separate graffiti crimes.

Carlos K Romero is accused of leading police on a pursuit across San Diego County to the Mexican border will be arraigned in San Diego’s courthouse.

And Azteco Frankie Soto is set to be arraigned in Chula Vista’s courthouse for supposedly trashing a South Bay high school cafeteria over the Thanksgiving holiday.

And finally tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is meeting about a $320 million bond issue and some charter school business.
