San Diego Unified School Board Not Notified About Military-Style Vehicle

Whether you call it an MRAP, a tank or a rescue vehicle, San Diego Unified School District’s new military-style vehicle is causing controversy on the school board.

Since KPBS media partner inewsource first reported on Tuesday that the district’s Police Department had acquired the armored vehicle under a federal program to give away military surplus equipment to law enforcement agencies, the story has gone viral.

On Thursday, San Diego Unified trustee Scott Barnett said he and his fellow school board members should have been told about the plan to acquire a mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle.

Two helicopter squads come home today. Heavy Sea Combat Squadron 6 the “Screaming Indians” and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 75 “WoldPack” will arrive at Naval Air Station North Island this morning at 8:15.

In court two cases of note

First at 1:30 this afternoon in San Diego’s downtown courthouse Kevin Bollaert is being arraigned for posting sensitive photos of women on a revenge porn website. Revenge porn is when a person (usually a man) posts a reveling and personal photo of another person (usually a woman) in an attempt to “slut shame” them and usually it’s because of a romance gone wrong. However in this case Bollaert is accused of not just posting the images, but trying to extort money from the victims to remove them. Allegedly he was asking for $300 per image for their removal.

Also at 1:30 but in Vista’s courthouse Rober Bejaran will hear his fate for murdering two teens at an Oceanside park.

San Diego City Council’s Rules and Economic Development Committee is meeting at 9 AM. They’re talking about a three-year economic development plan and a lobbying program.

This morning at 5:30 the Armed Services YMCA is honoring military parents. It’s the 27th Annual SuperParent Holiday Toy event, where military parents get to shop for donated toys and gift cards. The whole thing is superhero-themed.

Then at 5:00 tonight San Diego’s North Chamber of Commerce is collecting bedding for Escondido’s Interfaith Community Services.

In Alpine at 6:00 tonight organizers from the 38th Annual East County Toy Drive will announce if they’ve reached their 10,000 toy goal or not. Last year they collated 7,500 toys.

And finally tonight at 8:00 the North Coast Repertory Theatre is giving a preview of is holiday show “The Humbug Holiday Spectacular”

All over San Diego County several events honoring veteran’s today, 4-days before Veterans Day.

At 9:00 AM Chula Vista High School students are holding “Take a Veteran to School Day”. Students are bringing veterans and active duty service members to school and will have an assemble honoring them at 11:30 this afternoon.

Today is the 238th birthday of the Marine Corps and leathernecks at Camp Pendleton are celebrating at zero nine thirty.

At 11:00 this morning on campus at the University of California San Diego the new Student Veterans Resource Center is being dedicated. UCSD says it has 251 students that are veterans.

And at noon at California State University San Marcos they are celebrating Veterans Day to honor its 1100 students who have served.

This afternoon at 1:30 in Chula Vista’s courthouse Elysia Roiz will be sentenced for trying to rob a bank then running away to Mexico.

And in Vista’s courthouse also at 1:30 Agustin Garcia Morales will be arraigned. He’s accused of being a drunk while driving and running over and killing a 3-year-old boy.

And finally tonight at 6:30 in Cathedral Catholic High School’s gym, San Diego Police are giving a seminar on teen sexting.

The first winter storm is hitting San Diego. It’s going be windy and rainy all over the county today and into tomorrow. According to the National Weather Service winds gusts will reach 65-miles per hour in our mountains and valleys. High profile vehicles, like vans and trucks, should be very careful of the wind. Things are supposed to start to calm down late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Authorities are on the lookout for an arsonist that set a church on fire. At around 8:00 last night firefighters were called to Santa Sophia Catholic Church in Spring Valley. It took them about 10 minutes to put out the non-injury fire and there is no damage estimate yet.

San Diego’s City Council is busy all day today.

First at 9:00 AM the Rules Committee is talking about protecting the city’s retirement system from law suits over health benefits and the military’s economic impact on the city.

Then at 2:00 this afternoon the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee is talking about San Diego Police’s staffing issues.

Beekeeping regulations are on the agenda for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors this morning at 9:00. They want to make it easier for people to keep bees as a hobby.

This morning is International Walk and Bike to School Day. All across San Diego County kids will be hitting the road to promote how healthy it is for kids to walk to school.

And tonight at 6:00 at the Oceanside Public Library government dysfunction is the topic for a talk by Professor Stephen Nichols.

Redevelopment funding and public utilities are on the agenda for the San Diego City Council Infrastructure Committee this morning at 9:00. A report from Civic San Diego says that many former redevelopment projects are still underfunded and the Public Utilities Department has ideas on how to streamline some of its projects.

Todd Gloria, San Diego’s Interim Mayor, is talking to the press this morning at 9:15. It’s his weekly briefing.

This afternoon at 1:30 one sentencing and an arraignment of note … First in El Cajon’s courthouse Lance Wright is being sentenced for lying about getting into a gun fight while working as a security guard. Then in San Diego’s downtown courthouse Americus De Orenday will be arraigned. He’s accused of murdering his wife then driving her body to San Diego Police Headquarters. And third Paul Brinkman is in court at 1:30 this afternoon for his arraignment. Brinkman was shot by an officer after charging him with a pair of scissors according to police.

Tonight in Carlsbad at 6:00 the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with the public about decommissioning the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and how it will affect the surrounding community.

The military’s economic impact on the San Diego region is the subject of a report by the San Diego Military Advisory Council. It will be released this morning at 10:30.

Orphaned pets will be remembered this morning at the first Remember Me Thursday candle lighting in the Aventine Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla at 9:00 AM.

The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering at the University of San Diego will be officially established this morning at 10:30.

And finally … the Oceanside Public Library and Jazz 88.3 are starting its six-week “American Music” series at 6:00 PM.

Originally broadcast live on-line, Dawn Blitz 2013 is a large multi-national training exercise. And today troupes will practice amphibious landing at Red Beach on Camp Pendleton.

The Defense Department says “This will be the largest landing conducted aboard Camp Pendleton since both combat operations began more than 10 years ago”

San Diego City Council has a full day of committee meetings ahead of itself today. First at 9:00 AM the Infrastructure Committee is meeting. The items of note on the agenda are the Independent Budget Analyst, municipal infrastructure, and a report from the Development Services Department. Then at 2:00 this afternoon they are going to talk about extending the ambulance contract with Rural/Metro Ambulance for another year.

In court a foreign man accused of sexually assaulting a woman while he was in San Diego for a convention will be arraigned. The Canadian man will be in San Diego’s downtown courthouse at 1:30 this afternoon.

Also this afternoon at 2:00 the San Diego Immigrant Youth Collective will protest at Escondido’s Police Department Headquarters. The group will voice criticism over the department’s cooperation with Immigration and Custom Enforcement or ICE. Escondido Police Department is the only department in the nation to have ICE agents working in the same building. According to the San Diego Immigrant Youth Collective there are eleven ICE agents stationed at Escondido Police Department headquarters.

This morning at 5:30 the Armed Service YMCA is celebrating the “Christmas You Missed”. This annual midsummer tradition is for military family to celebrate the holidays with their family’s service members that were deployed over the holidays. 530 people from military families are participating along with carolers, music from the Third Marine Aircraft Wing Band, and of course Santa will make a special appearance as well.
