San Diego’s First Medical Marijuana Permit Faces Last Bureaucratic Hurdle

San Diego could have its first legal medical marijuana dispensary this week, but the pot pioneer and his opposition have fought at every step in the process.

The medical marijuana collective A Green Alternative is set to become San Diego’s first officially permitted medical pot shop, almost 20 years after voters passed Proposition 215, allowing for medical cannabis.

David Blair holds a doctorate in business, teaches business ethics at San Diego State University and is the chief executive officer of A Green Alternative.

Today is the day to apply for your Conditional Use Permit to distribute medical marijuana. Dispensary hopefuls have been waiting in line over night for one of the coveted permits, from the Development Services Office. The city is only issuing 4 permits per council district and there are nine districts, so that’s 36 permits in the city. Permits could cost as much at $100,000 each and take from 6 to 12 months to get. If you get one it’s only good for 5 years. Some of the regulations are … dispensaries must be 1000 feet from parks, schools, churches, playgrounds and 100-feet away from residential zones. The office open at 8:00 AM

This morning at 10:30 opponents to the new Barrio Logan zoning plan are talking to the press. They say that the new plan will cost San Diego jobs and hurt the ship maintenance industry. They want you to vote no on prop B and C this coming June’s election. However protonates of the new plan say the new zoning rules give the ship maintenance industry more space but also create a buffer zone between the toxic industry and residential properties.

In court today two arraignments and a sentencing are scheduled all at 1:30. The Arraignments are both in El Cajon’s courthouse’s Department 2. Christopher Szumski and Brandon Tye are accused of stealing donation money and sacramental wine from a church in Ramona. Angelo Paschall is accused of escaping from San Diego Police custody after a robbery arrest.

The sentencing is in San Diego courthouse’s Department 31 and is for Alex Charfauros. He was convicted of second-degree murder for his involvement in the death of SDPD officer Christopher Wilson. Today is about a guilty plea for trying to dissuade a witness form testifying.

Habitat for Humanity is opening up a store this morning at 9:30. It’ll be called ReStore. They’ll sell donated building materials to raise money for habitat homes.

At 10:00 AM a new 88-seat amphitheater at Live Oak County Park in Fallbrook is opening up with a ribbon-cutting.

San Diego’s Downtown Partnership is launching a tree-lighting program. They hope the lit trees with create a better ambiance and improve the safety of downtown.

And finally tonight at 7:00 Navy Captain Mark Cedrun is telling his first hand story about seizing a cargo ship that was taken by Somali pirates. This is the story that was made into the movie “Captain Phillips”

San Diego Police are asking for your help to catch a killer. 45-year-old Alberto Sanchez was sitting in his SUV when a man in his 20’s rode up on a bicycle and shot him several times. Sanchez died at the hospital shortly after that. Anyone with any info is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 858-580-8477.

San Diego’s City Council has a full plate today.

First at 9:00 AM the Council’s Budget Committee is meeting about the Tourism Marketing District’s plans for the coming fiscal year.

Then this afternoon at 2:00 the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee is meeting about changing the city’s medical marijuana rules. The city’s new rules about medical marijuana dispensaries go into effect on April 24 and the dispensaries that are operating outside those rules will not be grandfathered in. The committee is also looking at how food safety rules should impact edible medical marijuana products.

San Diego County Board of Supervisors is meeting this morning at 9:00 about roads and changing building codes so they help improve energy efficiency.

The United Farm Workers online archive has been purchased by U.C. San Diego library. Late this afternoon at 4:00 the library is officially announcing the accusation in a ceremony on campus at Geisel Library’s Seuss Room.

And finally tonight at 5:00 you can meet San Diego’s mayor and ask him questions. Mayor Faulconer is talking with San Diegans at the Bayside Community Center at 2202 Comstock St.

Politicos all across San Diego County are super busy today.

First at 9:00 AM the San Diego County Board of Supervisors is meeting and on the agenda are: The way health risk assessments are taken for deputy sheriffs, Buying the Sheriff’s department a new helicopter, Getting the land for a new Lakeside Sheriff’s substation, and making it easier for venders to sell stuff at farmers markets.

San Diego City Council is meeting this morning at 10:00. The big things on the agenda are: Honoring former fire department Public Information Officer Maurice Luque, And medical marijuana dispensary regulations.

The new group Coalition for Local Education through Accountability of Resources, or CLEAR is hosting their first press conference this morning at 10:20. They want more transparency in San Diego County school districts. Support for their group is coming from the American Civil Liberties Union, Barrio Logan College Institute, League of Women Voters, and Urban League.

At noon the San Diego County Taxpayers Association is talking about new state stormwater regulations in a luncheon panel at the San Diego Foundation.

Tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is meeting about: parental involvement in schools, honoring Interim Mayor Todd Gloria, and financial reports on construction bonds.

Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox is giving her “State of the City” speech at 6:00 PM in Chula Vista’s council chambers.

In court two noteworthy things, both at 1:30 this afternoon.

In San Diego’s courthouse it’s the arraignment for one of the male nurses accused of engaging in sex with another male nurse. All while caring for a 99-year-old incapacitated stroke victim.

And in El Cajon’s courthouse the sentencing for Troy Perott for slashing a friend with a box cutter.

And finally … Tonight at 7:00 the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 143’d anniversary.
