A man is dead and the driver of the truck that hit him is still on the loose. According to police last night at around 7:00 the 35-year-old victim was walking his dog and crossing the 1000 block of University Avenue in Hillcrest when he was struck by black truck. He was declared dead at 7:22 at Scripps Mercy Hospital. Police says the suspects truck is described as being black with “4 x 4” written in red on the rear quarter panel. Police go on to say that there were two people in the truck and ask anyone with any info to call SDPD at 858-495-7900.

San Diego City Council is busy this afternoon at 2:00.

First the great-grandmother who says she was sexually harassed by San Diego’s infamous former mayor Bob Filner is being honored by the council. Peggy Shannon says that Filner grabbed her, kissed her, and repeatedly asked her out. Today she’ll get an official apology and today will be declared “Peggy Shannon Day”.

After that the council is talking about a proposal to close the La Jolla Children’s Pool. The Children’s Pool was created near La Jolla Cove as a safe place for kids to swim in the ocean but seals and sea lions have taken it over. It’s a perennial issue for the council. Some want to block of the beach and leave it for the sea life while other say it is an artificial cove and should be kept clear for children to swim.

This morning at 8:40 The Port of San Diego is opening up its new 4 point 2-5 million dollar power station at the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal. It’s supposed to make it easier for ships to get power and not use their diesel engines as much while docked.

Tonight at 7:00 San Diego Unified School District is taking public input on its plan called “Vision 2020” at Mission Bay High School.

And finally tonight at 7:00 32 performing arts volunteers are being honored by the San Diego Performing Arts League at the 21st Star Awards.

This afternoon at 1:30 49-year-old Hans Petersen will be arraigned for shooting his ex-brother-in-law and an old business associate. Petersen is suspected of shooting 53-year-old Steven Dowdy at his home then going to the home of Ronald Fletcher and shooing him. Both victims survived the attack. Police say Petersen was angry over losing his job.

San Diego’s City Council is meeting at 2:00 this afternoon to talk about parking.

Tonight at 5:30 El Cajon’s Ronald Reagan Community Center is hosting a community meeting about next year’s America on Main Street party. The event is part of a national series of Flag Day community celebrations.

And this morning at 9:30 San Diego’s brand new downtown library opens its doors for its first official day. The nine-story 500,000-square-foot building cost $185 million to build and will be open until 8:00 tonight.

Three San Diego based crewmen are OK after their helicopter crashed in the Red Sea. Why the MH-60S Nighthawk helicopter crashed is still under investigation, but the Navy says they do not suspect “hostile action” to be the cause. And the search is continuing for two other crew members that are still missing.

Two arraignments in San Diego’s downtown courthouse at 1:30 this afternoon.

First: Hans Peterson will be arraigned for shooting two people in two separate La Jolla homes, hours apart.

Second: Noah Ehlinger is being arraigned for reportedly trying to shoot a romantic rival.

In El Cajon’s courthouse at 1:30 PM Tassie Behrens will be arraigned on child abuse and drug violations following the drowning of her two toddlers in a friends pool.

San Diego’s city council is busy today.

First at 10:00 AM Council members Sherri Lightner, Marti Emerald, and Mark Kersey are talking to the press about the city’s disaster preparedness.

Then this afternoon at 2:00 the whole council meets and top of the agenda is the Independent Budget Analyst’s report on infrastructure. That’s sure to make it into the mayoral campaigns of all the candidates.

And finally this morning at 8:00 am golfers will attempt to win $1,000,000 in the finals for the LM Capital Group $1 Million Hole-in-One Shootout at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course in Santee. The Holiday Bowl origination puts on the event and in its 24-years no one has ever won.

[trib_ndn vid=24846696]LA JOLLA, Calif. — A private company will begin work to eliminate the stench in La Jolla Cove caused by bird guano Tuesday under a plan announced by Mayor Bob Filner.

On Friday, Filner declared that the cormorant, pigeon, gull, pelican and other animal waste covering the cliffs east of La Jolla Cove is a public health hazard and said a plan eliminate the odor was underway.

City officials said the plan involved essentially neutralizing the chemicals and organisms that were causing the smell, and called for safety measures to protect both workers and the area’s animal life.

“We finally have a plan that we think may work,” Filner said. “And that’s good because I was about to go get a bucket and mop, or a big vacuum cleaner and do it myself.”

Filner issued an emergency finding under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 to get the…

Regional government is busy today.

First at 8:00 am the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners is meeting to talk about its budget for next fiscal year.

Then this morning at 10:00 San Diego’s City Council is finishing up its examination of Mayor Bob Filner’s proposed budget, and then open discussion this afternoon.

Finally at 10:00 AM San Diego Association of Governments Board of Directors is meeting about the regional plan for the county.

A new Red Cross Blood Services Center is opening up this morning. The center will be a hub for planning community blood drives, recruiting blood donors and volunteers, and distribution. The grand opening is at 10:30 AM at 4229 Ponderosa Ave.

If you get out of work early drop by the Central Library at 2:30 PM and take in a movie. They are continuing their 2012 Oscar winner’s film series. Today they are showing Django Unchained.

Big concert weekend starting today.

First the 12th Annual Gator by the Bay Zydeco and Blues Festival starts this afternoon at 3:30. Over the next three days more than 60 acts are going to perform at Spanish Landing. It all starts this afternoon at 3:30

And finally Chula Vista’s own American Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez is headlining Channel 933’s Summer Kickoff tonight at 6:00 in Chula Vista’s Sleep Train Amphitheatre.

qualcommLA JOLLA, Calif. — The local division of a multidisciplinary high technology research center will be renamed next month in honor of Qualcomm’s financial support, according to UC San Diego.

The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology at UC San Diego will be known as the “Qualcomm Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, the UC San Diego Division of Calit2,” or Qualcomm Institute for short.

The San Diego maker of cell phone technology has provided $26 million to the institute over a dozen years.

“This recognition is much deserved given the important roles that Qualcomm and the Qualcomm Foundation have played in helping us to build and cement the institute’s reputation as a world leader in technologies that benefit society,” UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. “The new name is a fitting tribute to Qualcomm as Calit2’s largest industry supporter and one of the main employers of our alumni.”

Some of San Diego’s most important Democratic politicians will urge President Obama to stop the sequester today. Congressmen Scott Peters, Congressmen Juan Vargas, Mayor Bob Filner, and Councilmember David Alvarez are talking to the media at 8:30 this morning along with Derry Pence President of the Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association. They are worried about how the sequester will affect San Diego maritime industry. Congressman Peters has been making the rounds talking about the sequester and how he thinks it will affect San Diego.

Today the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will salute the Tuskegee Airmen with a colors ceremony. A colors ceremony is when service members present the nation’s flag, this ceremony will be in honor of the nearly 1000 African-American pilots that broke race barriers and trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field.

San Diego has another feather in its cap. Trip advisor dot come named La Jolla Cove one of the country’s best beaches. The cove came in at number eight. The number one Trip Advisor beach in the world is … Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa Italy.
