Today is day four of the hotel workers hunger strike. It all began when the Hilton hotel started using e-verify to confirm the immigration status of their workers. Six workers quit and nine have yet to be verified. The nine say they are allowed to work in the states and that they only make $8.40 and an hour … all combined this is causing their families great pain. The nine are hopping to find out today at 5 pm if they can go back to work.

Six to nine foot waves will pound San Diego beaches today according to the National Weather Service. A six to nine foot wave means theses waves will have 12-18 foot wave faces. That’s huge. Along with the high surf rip currents are expected as well. Together they are very dangerous, just watch from the shore today.

Opening statements in the case against two men allegedly caught on surveillance video abusing an autistic man begins this morning at 9:00 AM in Vista.

At 9:30 the USS Cowpens is arriving at Naval Base San Diego. The Cowpens has been based in Japan for 13-years.

Sentencing at 1:30 this afternoon for the man shot by police inside a movie theater after he threatened his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint.

HotelWorkersProtestIf you drive past the Hilton Mission Valley anytime over the next five days, you’ll see tents and five hotel workers camped out on a hunger strike.

“(We’re) going to be out here on the street the whole time,” said one of the strikers Francisco Pazos.

They are showing support for nine Hilton Mission Valley employees who may lose their jobs.  They feel they’re being unfairly targeted for demanding better wages.   On March 21, Evolution Hospitality took over management of the hotel and used federal government E-Verify program to verify the legality of their workforce.  Now, nine undocumented workers may get fired.

Fox 5 asked Pazos to respond to the argument that the hotel is simply following the law by ensuring the company doesn’t employ illegal immigrants.  Pazos said the hotel has employed…

The search for two men the tried to kidnap a 17-year-old girl yesterday morning continues today. The teenage girl was at the corner of Kenwood Drive and Campo Road in Spring Valley late yesterday morning. The would-be kidnappers drove along side the teenager and attempted to force her into the van. She was able to fight them off. They are described as being a black man 5 foot 8 stocky in there 40’s with acne scars, unshaven with short hair. Any one with information should call the San Diego Sheriff.

This morning at 8:30 the frigate USS Gary is returning to San Diego after a 6-months in Central and South America. They helped to seize more than 12,000 pounds of cocaine while deployed.

At noon the Democratic Party and union leader will talk to media in support of several hotel workers who’s rehiring is being held up by the E-Verify system. E-Verify is the system that checks for employment eligibility of possible undocumented immigrants.

Early this morning over a dozen people are displaced and five are injured at a downtown San Diego hotel fire. Reportedly people jumped from the second story to save themselves from the smoke and fire. However no deaths have been reported yet. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Today the owner of pit bull that killed a 75-year-old woman is set to be sentenced. Cala Cornelio was convicted … with her mother … of involuntary manslaughter. The two owned a pit bull that attacked and killed their elderly neighbor. Sentencing is scheduled for 9 AM.

This afternoon a Marine Corporal will be arraigned for the murder of a Navy veteran. Back on January 3rd the navy man’s body was found tucked into a sleeping bag, in an S-U-V parked in a lot near a supermarket in Oceanside. 23-year-old Kevin Albert Richard Coset arrested on February 22 will be arraigned at 1:30 in the Vista courthouse.

San Diego County’s Board of Supervisors is going to consider using a faster water quality testing system. Every time it rains the Department of Environmental Health tests San Diego’s waters. Storm runoff can dump pollutants and bacteria along out coast. The program is funded by the state and managed by the county. The new testing system promises to deliver results in just 4-hours. If approved the new testing system would be tried out over the next year and cost just under $60,000.

This morning San Diego Police Department’s SWAT team is getting some new gear today. Citizens for SWAT will is replacing weapons that are over 20-years-old. The funding comes from more than 70 San Diego companies.

Comic Con is 5-moths away and the rush for hotel rooms is already starting. The on-line reservation process starts at 9:00 AM today. According to UTSanDiego.com comic con attendees must list six hotel choices and rooms will be given on a first come first serve basis.
