We Could All (or most of us) Be Wrong Still Votes To Count in San Diego

Mayoral Can OTS

With 34500 mail-in and provisional ballots left to be counted many are calling the mayoral election a victory for David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer.
The mail-in ballots that are left to be counted are ones that voters dropped off at the polling place and the provisional ones are usually from people that voted at the worn polling place.

Those ballots need to be counted by hand.

Now the question remains are these voters like the rest of the voters that were counted or are they different somehow.

Personally I bet the numbers are going to stay roughly the same … but you never know.

Follow the San Diego Registrar of Voters for the up to the minute results.

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for November 20, 2013

The first election for San Diego Mayor is over.

The results are …

Nathan Fletcher got 49,645 votes and that amounted to 24.30%.

David Alvarez got 52,283 votes or 25.59 percent

And Kevin Faulconer walked away with 89,043 votes or 43.58%.

Because no single candidate was able to get more than 51 percent of the votes Kevin Faulconer and David Alvarez face each other in a run-off election early next year.

It was a hard fought but mostly collegiate campaign. Now if Alvarez is able to take in Fletchers voters he could win and be the next mayor. However if Faulconer is able to convert some of Fletcher’s Democratic voters to cross the isle then he could win.

It going to be an exciting next few months.

Health care workers at the many University of California hospitals and clinics are holding a one-day picket all across California. Picketers accuse the U.C. system of unfair labor practices and furthermore they say that patient care is being used a “bargaining chip” by management. Employees are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299. The University of California and the union have been in negotiations for nearly 18-months now. Here in San Diego they’ll be at the University of California San Diego campus just off of 9500 Gilman Drive at 8:30 AM. Then at 9:30 AM they’ll be at the UC San Diego Medical Center Thornton Hospital at 9300 Campus Point Drive. And at 10:00 this morning then again at noon picketers will be making their point in front of the UC San Diego Medical Center Hillcrest at 200 West Arbor Drive.

Growing San Diego’s biotech industry is what Interim Mayor Todd Gloria is talking about at 10:00 this morning at the San Diego Convent5ion Center. He’s also going to announce the return of the Bio International Convention to San Diego next year.

At 1:00 this afternoon the Civic San Diego Board of Directors is meeting to talk about how to renovate the public space at the Lyceum Theatre.

Jose Luis Sanchez the Navy Commander accused of accepting cash, hookers, and other things form defense contractors in exchange for classified info is in San Diego’s Federal Court this morning at 10:30

Marcian Flores Jr. is being arraigned for a crash that killed his 60-year-old father at 1:30 this afternoon in San Diego’s downtown courthouse.

Also at 1:30 in Chula Vista’s courthouse the arraignment of Alberto Figueroa Jr. who will be accused of killing his brother with a samurai sword and barbecue fork.

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for November 19, 2013

Today is Election Day in San Diego.

Since Bob Filner was removed from office for sexual harassment San Diego has had interim mayor Todd Gloria at the helm. If no single candidate wins 51 percent of the vote there will be a runoff election in the spring. Most likely that is what will happen.

The top candidates are

First: Councilman David Alvarez. He is a Democrat and has the official party endorsement

Second: Councilman Kevin Faulconer. Faulconer is the official Republican Party enforced candidate.

Third: Nathan Fletcher. Nathan has the Police Officer’s Association and Firefighter Union endorsement.

Forth: Mike Aguirre. Mike is the former City Attorney

In the last poll Faulconer was leading with Fletcher and Alvarez both more or less tied for second.

Polls open at 7:00 AM and first numbers will come from the Registrar of Voters at 8:00 PM when the polls close. According to the Registrar 37% of eligible voters have already voted.

I sat down with each of the top three candidates for about an hour. If you want to learn more about where they are coming from, gain some insight into who they are, what they want to do with the city, and why they want to be mayor check out the Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast. There are a few other things of note going on today.

San Diego’s Board of Port Commissioners is meeting this afternoon at 1:00 about the Living Coast Discovery Center’s long term plan and possibly raising the rates for parking meters along the coast.

And finally tonight at 5:00 what to do with a 22 million dollar state grant is on the agenda for the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education

Today you can cast your vote for the mayor of San Diego. Early voting at the Registrar of Voter’s office 5201 Ruffin Road is available from 8:00 AM to 5:00 tonight. And you can still register to vote through November 4th. Mail in Ballots are available today too. The only thing on the ballot is the Mayoral election, so be sure to be counted.

Dense fog is slowing the morning commute. Hazardous conditions will affect the roads five to ten miles east from the coast. So leave early and slow down.

Then at 7:00 tonight mayoral candidates Mike Aguirre, David Alvarez, and Nathan Fletcher are talking the environment with the Sierra Club. Kevin Faulconer is unable to attend but did submit his answers in writing. That means that all of the candidates have had a chance to review the questions before hand and thus craft their answers. But being there in person means you can rebut you opponents. They’ll be at the Balboa Park Club’s Santa Fe Room.

Political Podcast with Nathan Fletcher

Listen above of get it on iTunes HERE

Welcome to another Political Podcast from BowlersDesk.com.

This time Ric Epps and I sat down with Mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher.

This is Nathan’s second bite at the mayoral apple. We talked about everything from the economy, to the federal shutdown, and beer.

To me his campaign doesn’t seem to be that different substantively this time around, with the exception of his staff.

Reaching across the aisle and working with other is a main theme.

His campaign wants voters to see him as the boss you like. Firm but fair.

You be the judge.
