Temporary Fire Station Coming To San Diego’s Skyline Area

A temporary fire station will soon open in the Skyline area of San Diego, which suffers from slow response times.

The $400,000 station, which is slated to open in April, will serve as a placeholder until a permanent facility can be built for the neighborhood. Construction for the temporary station began on Monday.

Life is returning to normal as firefighters finish off the still burning blazes that scorched San Diego. Last week a dozen separate fires blacked San Diego County.

Three fires on base at Camp Pendleton burned 21,900 acres. Two of the fires still burn. The Las Pulgas Fire is 75% contained and the San Mateo Fire is 97% contained.

Off base in the North San Diego County city of San Marcos the Cocos fire is 87% contained and all evacuations have been lifted. According to Cal Fire 39-homes are lost but thankfully no injuries.

In Carlsbad 8-homes single family homes, two multiple unit apparent buildings, two commercial buildings, and a trailer were lost in the Poinsettia Fire. Fortunately this fire is 100% contained, has been since Saturday.

The city is accepting donations to help those affected on their web site at http://www.readycarlsbad.org .

San Diego’s wounded and endangered opera company is holding a press conference today at 10:00 AM. The 50-year-old opera company is suffering with financial difficulties and controversies around its former artistic director haunt the cultural institution. Their closure was thought emanate but there are optimistic rumors around today’s press conference.

San Diego City Council is meeting this afternoon at 2:00. They’re talking about what the City Charter says about removing elected officials from office. Then at 6:00 PM in a special evening public hearing the council is meeting about next year’s $2.97 billion budget. The new budget extends library house, allocates pay for more police and fire recruits, helps fund a temporary fire station in Skyline and more.

Boston Marathon winner and San Diegan Meb Keflezighi is home and will be surprising some high school students at 11:45 AM. Meb is going to help give a $20,000 scholarship from Foot Locker to Claremont High senior Lillie Meakim. Meakim is one of 20 student athletes from across the county to win the scholarship.

San Diego City Council is starting a week of budget reviews. Over the next five days they are looking at each and every department budget in the proposed budget for this coming fiscal year. This morning at 9:00 they are looking at the overall spending plan followed by a look into the police and fire departments budgets. This afternoon at 2:00 they are reviewing the pensions, City Attorney budget and how much is spent of special events. The proposal gives SDPD over $417 million and SDFD nearly $218. However critics say the budget proposal doesn’t include enough to deal with the $1 billion, that’s Billion with a B, needed for infrastructure maintenance.

Tonight at 6:15 at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park San Diego State University music and dance students are giving a free Cinco de Mayo concert. Featuring SDSU’s Jazz Ensemble, Concert Chorus and the University’s new Mariachi Ensemble. The Mariachi Ensemble was started in 2012

And finally at 6:30 tonight at the San Diego Central Library the Muslim American experience is being presented by a panel of Muslim men.

Early this morning over a dozen people are displaced and five are injured at a downtown San Diego hotel fire. Reportedly people jumped from the second story to save themselves from the smoke and fire. However no deaths have been reported yet. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Today the owner of pit bull that killed a 75-year-old woman is set to be sentenced. Cala Cornelio was convicted … with her mother … of involuntary manslaughter. The two owned a pit bull that attacked and killed their elderly neighbor. Sentencing is scheduled for 9 AM.

This afternoon a Marine Corporal will be arraigned for the murder of a Navy veteran. Back on January 3rd the navy man’s body was found tucked into a sleeping bag, in an S-U-V parked in a lot near a supermarket in Oceanside. 23-year-old Kevin Albert Richard Coset arrested on February 22 will be arraigned at 1:30 in the Vista courthouse.
