AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for June 7, 2013

Sheriff’s Deputies discover a marijuana grow and two elderly women are under investigation. The two women aged 83 and 61, were living in tents near a burned down house in the East San Diego County community of Lakeside. The house burned down in the Cedar Fire back in 2003. Over 400 marijuana plants were seized, along with hash oil, and lab equipment.

Two notable things in court today…

First in San Diego’s courthouse at 9:00 AM the sentencing for Christine Padilla. She pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter for killing a nanny pushing a baby in a stroller.

And at 1:30 this afternoon the man accused of setting his own car on fire because he was being evicted from an Encinitas hotel will be arraigned in Vista’s courthouse.

At the Fashion Valley Mall’s California Pizza Kitchen the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is protesting at 1:00 this afternoon. The group says that the restaurants cheese supplier mistreats its cattle.

Also at 1:00 San Diego’s City Council is honoring the Central Library. The current building will close Sunday after 58-years. The new library will open in September.

And at noon on campus at University of California at San Diego it’s the 49th Annual Watermelon Drop. The pre-finals tradition began in 1965 when Professor Bob Swanson asked “What would be the terminal velocity of a watermelon dropped from the seventh floor of Urey Hall and how far would it splat?”. Today students will attempt to break the 1974 splat record of 167-feet 4-inches
