Big Changes, High Hopes For Sweetwater School Board This Election

All five of the Sweetwater Union High School District’s Board of Trustee seats are up for grabs in November and many hope the new candidates will bring a fresh start to a district plagued with corruption scandals.

The scandals involving the Sweetwater board of trustees began to unfold almost three years ago. Jill Galvez is a Chula Vista voter and former city council candidate. She said the entire district is still recovering from the humiliation.

“Our community has a black eye because of our crooked board members,” Galvez said. “It’s been an embarrassment, frankly, for the whole South Bay.”

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for April 3, 2014

State politics is hitting home.

Republican lieutenant governor candidate Ron Nehring is proposing some changes that he thinks will help to stop political corruption.

Nehring is well known in San Diego and very active within the local Republican party.

Four of California’s Democratic politicians are facing civil or criminal charges most notably Democratic state senator Leland Yee who was arrested for being part of a gun-running operation. Nehring is trying to use this in his campaign against his Democratic opponent the current lieutenant governor Gavin Newsom. His proposal, which in my opinion will go no wear past his campaign, is really about trying to get voters to see Democrats as corrupt and unethical.

However Newsom and Governor Brown (who is a Democrat too) are calling on the senators facing charges to all resign.

It is still technically too early to say that Nehring is the official Republican candidate. However many believe he will be. It’ll be interesting to see if voters begin to see things the way Nehring does and how that will shape the future of California politics.
Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom is in San Diego today. At 11:00 AM he’s sitting on a panel at the American Association of Political Consultants annual meeting that’s happening here through tomorrow. The panel is talking about politically active bicycling groups. He’s supposed to talk to the press after the panel and I wonder if anyone is going to ask him about Nehring’s new anti-corruption platform?

Dangerous distracted driving is what San Diego law enforcement is talking about this morning at 10:00. Officers will be demo’ing how dangerous it can be to talk on cell phone while driving at Qualcomm Stadium’s C, D and E parking lots.

This morning at 11:00 Fast-food employees are protesting what they say is “wage theft” out front of a KFC and Taco Bell at 4290 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.

There are two sentencings worth mentioning both at 1:30 this afternoon. In Vista’s courthouse Abel Hernandez is being put behind bars for molesting a relative for years.

Then in Chula Vista’s courthouse Azteco Frankie Soto is being sentenced for destroying a school cafeteria over last year’s Thanksgiving holiday.

A new playground is being designed by the experts who will use it, the kids. At 3:00 this afternoon the City of El Cajon, Foresters, Stoney’s Kids, the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County and KaBOOM! are all coming together to hear firsthand what kids want in a playground. They’ll be at Wells Park on Madison Ave in El Cajon.

And finally this morning at 8:00 the San Diego Safari Park is giving the media a special preview of the opening of its annual Butterfly Jungle. The enclosure has over 30 species of butterfly all fluttering about.

But after serving less than a year he was released pending his appeal. Disgraced Congressman Cunningham pleaded guilty in 2005 and spent eight years in prison. This afternoon at 2:00 San Diego City Council has a busy afternoon ahead of them. On their docket Medical marijuana regulations, Closing the Children’s Pool in La Jolla and a budget increase of 8.75 million dollars to help improve the Torrey Pines Golf Club.

Editorial alert!!

My road is littered with pot holes and the council is seriously looking at increasing the capital projects budget by 8.75 million dollars for a golf course?!?!?!

At 5:00 tonight the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is meeting about a report that says officials are skeptical the district can meet its financial obligations. The district projects a 2014-2015 budget shortfall of 62.6 million dollars … but they say they have a plan to fix it. One aspect of the plan is an early retirement program … Officials say that could save about 16 million dollars.

San Diego Police Officer’s Association is going to endorse their candidate for city council today at 11:30. A hint Mayor Kevin Faulconer is joining the P.O.A. for this presser. So it’s likely to be a candidate that he likes as well.

And finally today at 8:00 AM the Navy is remembering those lost in the Japanese earthquake and tsunami three years ago today. Rear Admiral Patrick Hall is leading the memorial on board the USS Ronald Reagan. The Reagan participated in the relief effort. 16,000 people died, 2,600 are still missing, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant had a partial meltdown … all caused by the magnitude 9 earthquake.

San Diego’s Mayor, Bob Filner, will publicly ask San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith to drop a lawsuit against the San Diego City Employees Retirement System. The suit is about pension contributions. Filner says that it’ll cost too much to sue and that since the city also represents the Employees Retirement System it is as though the city is suing itself. However Goldsmith alleges that this is all a Union backed scam to keep him from doing his job.

Fifteen current and former South San Diego County school officials are being arraigned this morning at 9:00 AM on corruption charges. The District Attorney is alleging that for years the defendants regularly took gifts as bribes in exchange for their votes on construction projects.
