The federal contractor convicted of bribing former congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham has had his request for a new trial denied. 59-year-old Brent Wilkes was originally convicted in November of 2007 and sentenced to 12-years in federal prison. But after serving less than a year he was released pending his appeal. Disgraced Congressman Cunningham pleaded guilty in 2005 and spent eight years in prison. Now 72-year-old Cunningham is free and living in an undisclosed location.
At 1:30 this afternoon in San Diego’s courthouse Loren McDonald will hear his fate for molesting a 4-year-old girl. McDonald, a special education teacher, pleaded guilty and is looking at 18-years in prison.
San Diego County Board of Supervisors has a lot on its plate today. Their meeting officially starts at 9:00 and on the docket Oversight of residential care facilities, E-cigarette policies and Farmer’s market regulations.
Then at noon Supervisor Dianne Jacob and D.A. Bonnie Dumanis are giving a press conference about the residential care facility oversight and the proposed reforms.
Before the noon press conference at 10:00 AM the D.A. is talking to the press about thieves that steal medication from real estate open houses and how to prevent it.
This afternoon at 2:00 San Diego City Council has a busy afternoon ahead of them. On their docket Medical marijuana regulations, Closing the Children’s Pool in La Jolla and a budget increase of 8.75 million dollars to help improve the Torrey Pines Golf Club.
My road is littered with pot holes and the council is seriously looking at increasing the capital projects budget by 8.75 million dollars for a golf course?!?!?!
At 5:00 tonight the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is meeting about a report that says officials are skeptical the district can meet its financial obligations. The district projects a 2014-2015 budget shortfall of 62.6 million dollars … but they say they have a plan to fix it. One aspect of the plan is an early retirement program … Officials say that could save about 16 million dollars.
San Diego Police Officer’s Association is going to endorse their candidate for city council today at 11:30. A hint Mayor Kevin Faulconer is joining the P.O.A. for this presser. So it’s likely to be a candidate that he likes as well.
And finally today at 8:00 AM the Navy is remembering those lost in the Japanese earthquake and tsunami three years ago today. Rear Admiral Patrick Hall is leading the memorial on board the USS Ronald Reagan. The Reagan participated in the relief effort. 16,000 people died, 2,600 are still missing, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant had a partial meltdown … all caused by the magnitude 9 earthquake.
