This afternoon at 1:30 two men accused of selling meth at a Mission Bay Sports Center, that hosts youth camps, will be arraigned in San Diego’s downtown courthouse. 32-year-old Spencer Nicholas Edmonds and 41-year-old Vincent Manuel Garcia are accused of dealing meth along with seven other people. There bail is set at $500,000

Also at 1:30 half of a pair accused of stealing computer equipment from an elementary school will be arraigned in El Cajon’s courthouse today.

Regional politicos will be busy today.

First at 9:00 AM the San Diego County Board of Supervisors is listening to the public about their proposed 4 point 97 billion dollar budget. The new budget increases spending by two and half percent.

And this afternoon at 2:00 the San Diego City Council votes on its 2 point 75 billion dollar spending plan. The new plan includes revisions from the Mayor and a five-year labor agreement.

Then this evening at 5:30 the San Diego Association of Governments, or SANDAG, is talking about construction for the Mid-City Bus Route and trolley expansion to La Jolla.

This morning at 10:45 Democratic Congressman Scott Peters is announcing he’s going to donate eight percent of his monthly income to the non-profit Senior Community Centers. Every month $1,300 will go to the non-profit that helps feed San Diego’s senior citizens. That means he make $195,000 a year

This afternoon starting at 1:00 thousands of San Diego Unified School District high school students are graduating.

And finally tonight at 6:30 at the Birch Aquarium Charlie Kennel the former Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography is giving a talk about the future of manned space travel. Kennel is now the chairman of the National Academies Space Studies Board.

Sheriff’s Deputies discover a marijuana grow and two elderly women are under investigation. The two women aged 83 and 61, were living in tents near a burned down house in the East San Diego County community of Lakeside. The house burned down in the Cedar Fire back in 2003. Over 400 marijuana plants were seized, along with hash oil, and lab equipment.

Two notable things in court today…

First in San Diego’s courthouse at 9:00 AM the sentencing for Christine Padilla. She pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter for killing a nanny pushing a baby in a stroller.

And at 1:30 this afternoon the man accused of setting his own car on fire because he was being evicted from an Encinitas hotel will be arraigned in Vista’s courthouse.

At the Fashion Valley Mall’s California Pizza Kitchen the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is protesting at 1:00 this afternoon. The group says that the restaurants cheese supplier mistreats its cattle.

Also at 1:00 San Diego’s City Council is honoring the Central Library. The current building will close Sunday after 58-years. The new library will open in September.

And at noon on campus at University of California at San Diego it’s the 49th Annual Watermelon Drop. The pre-finals tradition began in 1965 when Professor Bob Swanson asked “What would be the terminal velocity of a watermelon dropped from the seventh floor of Urey Hall and how far would it splat?”. Today students will attempt to break the 1974 splat record of 167-feet 4-inches

4-days of dangerous surf along San Diego’s south facing beaches will begin today. According to the National Weather Service large surf and rip currents will make swimming hazardous. The warning begins tonight at 5:00 ending Saturday morning at 11:00.

San Diego’s City council is meeting today. First this morning at 9:00 the Rules and Economic Development Committee is work shopping some small business programs. And then this afternoon at 2:00 the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee is meeting to talk about a proposed contract with the city’s ambulance contractor. The city contracts with Rural/Metro Ambulance for emergency medical service. If the contract extension is approved then getting a ride in an ambulance will cost more for San Diegans. Currently it costs $1761.00 but if approved it’ll cost $1820.00 for a ride in an ambulance.

And this evening at 4:30 Grossmont College will honor about 1200 students in its 52nd commencement.

Then at 6:00 the Barrio Logan College Institute is holding its graduation. They help disadvantaged students get into college. Many of the graduates will be the first ones in their families to both graduate from high school and go to college

San Diego City Council is meeting today. On the agenda the annual report from Padres about special events at Petco Park and the swearing in of the new District 4 Council member Myrtle Cole.

StoryCorps a nonprofit devoted to recording the oral history of America will be on board the USS Midway Museum recording stories. Starting at 10:00 AM they will record a series of interviews with some of San Diego’s veterans. At 11:00 AM the group will give a press conference followed by more interviews at 12:00.

This evening at 6:30 the community is invited to learn about wildfire preparedness from fire and law enforcement. The meeting will be at the Alpine Community Center on 1830 Alpine Blvd.

And tonight at 7:00 Mumford and Sons is performing at the Sleep Train Amphitheater in Chula Vista. So traffic could be crazy along the 805 south bound in Chula Vista … you may want to find an alternate route if that’s how you get home.

Protesters will gather at San Diego’s Federal Building at noon for 550 San Diego janitors that say they could lose their jobs without immigration reform. The protesters believe that the janitors would be eligible for the “pathway to citizenship” if congress was able to move on immigration reform. They will call for the President to suspend I-9 employment terminations until congress acts.

Also at noon San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria is announcing that the California State Historic Resources Commission named the North Park Water Tower an official historic site.

Today is National Bike to Work Day. In San Diego organizers expect over 7000 people to hop on their bikes this morning. Hundreds of pit stops have been set up all over San Diego County for the riders. Even County Supervisor Dave Roberts is getting in the act… He’s riding from Solana Beach to San Diego.

Camp Pendleton is hosting the Fifth Annual Recon Challenge this morning. Beginning at 4:00 AM participants will jump from a tower into a pool, assemble an M240 rifle underwater, and then race over an obstacle course.

More than 3000 students are graduating at Cal State San Marcos this morning at 10:30. And over the weekend more than 9000 student will walk at San Diego State University’s commencements.

And finally tonight at 6:00 El Cajon’s Recreation Department is hosting a “Kids Night Out Pool Party”. Parents and their children will be whooping it up at the Fletcher Hills Center and Pool at 2345 Center Place in El Cajon.

This morning at 10:00 Federal immigration officials are talking to the media about human trafficking. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) representatives will talk about how people are tricked by smugglers and then enslaved. They are also going to talk about training available for local law enforcement and community groups that help victims become survivors.

Military firefighters are clearing brush today in a controlled burn at Marin Corps Air Station Miramar. Smoke and flames may be visible in the area from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

The University of California at San Diego is opening its new trauma center 10:00 AM

Remember the Sprinter commuter train from Northern San Diego County? It was shut down because of brake problems. Well it is going to start running again and the North County Transit District is going to tell us when this morning at 10:30 at the Oceanside Transit Center.

Back down South in San Diego the Metropolitan Transit System is awarding 40 high school seniors laptops for winning an essay contest about creative ways to increase public transit ridership.

San Diego City Council is having a special closed session meeting at 5:00 tonight to talk about labor negotiation. However public comment is scheduled on this at some point as well.

And finally a groundbreaking at 4:00 this afternoon for Montgomery High School … They are getting new classrooms, gymnasium, science lab, and lunch area.

San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is in the news a lot today.

First remember the 32 students suspended for participating in the now infamous twerking video?

Parents appealed for leniency and were denied. The School Board is upholding the “Sexual Harassment” suspensions of the 3 male students of color and 28 white girls. For more check out Sharon Chen’s story at fox5sandiego.com.

Second … Disappointing Mayor Bob Filner, the School Board voted 4 to 1 to sell some district land in Mission Beach for 18.5 million to developer McKeller Ashbrook. The Mayor wanted to city to buy the land for 11 million then to share future equity with the district. But the Board thinks they need the cash now.

And finally … The School Board changes its graduation requirements to include computer literacy. Students will now have to take a computer class and pass a test to graduate.

San Diego’s City Council is busy today too.

First they are looking at a proposal to limit political party contribution to local elections

Then they are going to talk about requiring contractors for the city to pay a prevailing wage in order to get city contract with a value over $10 million. Just so you know Wikipedia says a prevailing wage “is defined as the hourly wage, usual benefits and overtime, paid to the majority of workers, laborers, and mechanics within a particular area.”

At noon union janitors are protesting at San Diego’s Federal Building. They say new employment eligibility forms are a threat to their jobs.

Also at noon health care workers at University of California at San Diego Medical Center protesting for one-hour. They are upset about their pay and retirement.

And tonight at 7:00 the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is holding a silent memorial ride for those bicyclists killed on the road.
