BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with David Alvarez

Listen above or on iTunes HERE

This time around we sat down with one the latest mayoral candidates, David Alvarez.

David is the city councilman for District 8.

Alvarez Podcast Recoding Pic

He is the son of a farm worker and grew up in one of San Diego’s toughest neighborhoods, Barrio Logan. He met us at his campaign headquarters which is also his garage. The soft-spoken Alvarez is confidante he’s going to win this and is trying to cast himself as the “new normal” or “new typical” face of San Diego.

It was enlightening and interesting.

He promises to fight hard and loud.

But you be the judge.

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for September 5, 2013

Syria’s civil war will hit home for San Diegans today. San Diego Veterans for Peace have a protest planned for tonight from 4:00 to 6:00. They are going to hang banners off of the 6th Ave Bridge over the I-5 freeway in downtown protest potential American military strikes in Syria. They say “With no UN endorsement, no NATO endorsement, no support from England, no Arab-League or international approval, now (if ever) is not the time for the United States to get involved”

At 9:00 this morning La Mesa Police will announce a $90,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a freeway shooter. Xusha Brown Jr was riding in a car going east on the 8 freeway near the 125 interchange when someone pulled alongside him and shot into the car fatally injuring Brown. La Mesa Police believe that other drivers on the freeway at that time must have seen the incident and they hope the reward will entice them to come forward.

At 10:30 AM San Diego’s interim mayor Todd Gloria along with its former mayor and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce will announce several new parts of the Miramar Air Show. The air show generates about $17 million for local economy and San Diego politicos have been trying to find a way to use some of that to keep the airshow going after part of the funding for the show was cut because of the federal budget sequestration. The air show will go one this October 4th and 5th with some changes. It remains to be seen if the money can be raised to bring any or the cut flight demonstration teams. But there will still be plenty to look at and do. Like nightly concerts, a run/walk, drag racing, and family bike ride.

And finally tonight at 4:30 the Chargers are giving media a special preview of all the new food on offer at Qualcomm Stadium. It’s all in honor of tonight’s first official NFL game between the Denver Broncos and the World Champion Baltimore Ravens. Kickoff is at 5:30 PM

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for August 5, 2013

Today San Diego’s Mayor Bob Filner enters a two-week intensive therapy meant to help him change his behavior in the wake of the eight sexual harassment allegations, two lecherous incident allegations, and even one incident of “weird” behavior.

Filner announced he is entering the therapy at a July 26 news conference. He said “I am responsible for my conduct and I must take responsibility”, However Filner still refuses to resign as mayor. All but one city councilperson is calling for his resignation, along with the San Diego Democratic Party, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman, several civic and business groups, and even the former mayor Jerry Sanders thinks he should resign.

Two separate recall efforts have joined forces and hope to gather the 102,000 signatures to force a recall vote.

But Filner says that he’ll receive daily briefings while in therapy and he believes he is still able to run the city.

Former San Diego cafe singer Jewel is back in San Diego today for the Global Business Travel Association’s 2013 convention. Former first lady Laura Bush, and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are set to speak at the conference as well tomorrow and Wednesday.

Guided missile frigate USS Rentz is deploying today to help stop the flow of drugs from South and Central America into the United States. Originally the Rentz was supposed to deploy in April but because of the budget sequestration the deployment was delayed until today.

Today at 11:00 AM San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System is starting construction on the trolley system. All of the stations from San Ysidro to Old Town are being remodeled to accommodate our new low-rise trolleys. This makes it easier and quicker to get on and off the trolley because you don’t have to step up and disabled passengers in wheel chairs can just roll right on. The construction is being kicked off with a press conference at 11:00 AM.

Tonight 6:30 two major Democratic groups are getting together to talk about sexual harassment

First members of the San Diego Democrats for Equality are meeting in private to talk specifically about the mayor and his sexual harassment allegations at the Joyce Beers Community Center.
