More than 100 cars had their windows broken over this past weekend in Chula Vista and a suspect or suspects are still on the loose. Chula Vista Police think a pellet gun was used and at least one man shot. The suspect vehicle is described as an older model green G-M-C van. Anyone with any info should call the Chula Vista Police Department at 619-691-5151.

San Diego City Council Budget Committee is meeting this morning at 9:00 about a report from the city’s Department of Information Technology and the agreement the city has with Sprint for wireless service.

El Cajon has a 1 point 4 million dollar grant to spend on community development and wants its residents to chime in on how to spend the money. They are meeting tonight at 6:00 at Renette Park Community Center.

San Diego State University is hosting a symposium about stem cell research and how it is advancing science starting at 5:30 tonight in the Donald P Shiley BioScience Center on campus.

Questions about the Syrian conflict will be answered by 5 University of California San Diego professors tonight at 5:00 at UCSD’s Robinson Auditorium.

And finally … tonight at 7:00 is the start of the 12th annual San Diego Film Festival. The first film is “12 Years as a Slave” after which there is a party at the Gaslamp Reading Theater.

Baby Born on Freeway

At 3:48 AM a 25-year-old woman gave birth on the 8 West in San Diego’s East County.

The young woman, on her way to the hospital, couldn’t wait any longer. Her Mother, the new Grandmother, was driving the laboring woman to the hospital when they pulled over and called for help.

But before help could arrive the new baby boy came into the world with his mother siting in the back seat on the 8 Westbound at Dunbar lane in Alpine.

Both mom and baby are fine and resting at Sharp Grossmont Hospital.

San Diego’s City Council is continuing to examine Mayor Bob Filner’s budget proposal. This morning they examine the pension, Housing Commission, and Civic parts of the budget. This afternoon they look at the Convention Center funding.

In a related story … Just yesterday San Diego’s Independent Budget Analyst said that the Convention Center has over 31 million dollars of backlogged maintenance.

Mayor Filner is meeting with the press today at noon. It’s all part of his regular question-and-answer sessions. He’s open to talking about anything the press wants

At 10:00 this morning California state firefighters will open California Wildfire Awareness Week with a press conference. All week officials from Cal Fire will remind us about being prepared for a wild fire. The statewide series of events ends Saturday

In court this afternoon Tim Lambesis, a former Christian Rock star and current heavy metal’er will be arraigned for trying to hire a hit man to kill his ex-wife.

And this evening the San Diego County Taxpayers Association is hosting its 18th annual Golden awards dinner. They recognize what they see at the best and worst of government spending. The festivities begin at 7:00 PM at the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina.

First thing this morning at around 5:00 AM over 170 young adults will be learning about what it means to be a firefighter. The 16 to 21 year olds will be given realistic firefighting experiences like freeing someone from a trapped vehicle … It’s all part of the California Fire Exploring Academy.

Traffic is going to be heavy getting into downtown San Diego from the 94 this morning. 102 year old water pipes are being replaced. So cars will have to squeeze into one lane along F Street between Park Boulevard and the 94 off ramp.

This morning at 8:45 the preliminary hearing begins today for Kevin Coset. He is the Marine Corporal accused of murdering a Navy veteran and leaving his body in the sailor’s SUV stuffed in a sleeping bag.

This afternoon Episcopalians from San Diego and Los Angeles will be caravanning to Friendship Park along the US / Mexico border in an attempt to bring attention to the plight of immigrants. They will be arriving at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 760 First Ave at around 1:00 PM

And the San Diego County Taxpayers Association is holding a casting call for its annual city parody video. They are meeting at the U.S. Grant Hotel Presidential Ballroom at 4:30 PM.

The owner of the bus involved in the fatal crash in San Bernardino that killed 8 has a spotty safety record according to a KSWB FOX5 story. The bus owned by National City based Scapadas Magicas crashed on its way back from a trip to Big Bear Mountain when it crashed into two other vehicles rolled over. According to a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration report Scapadas Magicas scores lower that 75 percent of all other passenger bus companies. Reportedly the company failed more than a third of its safety inspection. When Fox 5’s Sharon Chen when to the office of Scapadas Magicas it was empty. C-H-P says that the number of deaths is likely to rise.

A man suspected of stabbing his Navy ensign brother will be arraigned today. 21-year-old Zachary Castro Tenorio is accused of killing his 25-year-old brother Jonathan. Jonathan was also son-in-law to well-known former Guamanian senator Frank Blas.
Zachary faces 26 years to life in prison.

A Navy helicopter suffers a hard landing sending four crew members to the hospital. At about eleven P-M last night the MH-60R helicopter slammed into the deck while conducting training exercises. The two injured crewmen are at UCSD Medical Center and two as Scripps Mercy hospital, no word on their condition.

In a statement the Navy says “An aircraft mishap investigation is ongoing.”

Disgraced former congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham is out of prison. On Wednesday Cunningham left the Federal prison in Arizona to finish out the last few months of his sentence at a half-way-house. In 2005 Cunningham pleaded guilty for taking two point four million in bribes, conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud and tax evasion.

Reportedly once Cunningham is free he plans to live in a back-woods cabin in Arkansas

And today a cold winter storm makes its way into San Diego County. The storm is brining rain to the coast and snow in the mountains. Snowfall amounts will top six inches.

A lawsuit over the environmental impact of Del Mar Fairground expansion is settled. This morning representatives from the Fairgrounds, Cities of Del Mar and Solana Beach and the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority will official announce the settlement. This means that some Fairground expansion can take place and some proposed expansion is postponed for the time being. Now possible hotel construction is off the table for five years, no electronic sign near the freeway, and some increased traffic safety measures will be put in.

Today San Diego law enforcement will stuff patrol cars with teddy bears and deliver them to Rady Children’s Hospital. The twenty-two year old tradition began with just twelve bears being delivered by Coronado Police Officer Brian Hardy. Today there is a caravan of Police cars each filled to the brim with stuffed animals for the patients and their families.

And tonight at five thirty San Diego winter homeless shelter will host its tree lighting ceremony. The temporary shelter is set up at sixteenth and Newton Avenue and is expected to serve over a thousand people.
