This morning at 8:00 power company executives from across the country are taking about how they quote “operate, plan, build, regulate and invest in electric power transmission systems in Western North America” at the TransForum West conference. At first blush this may sound a bit wonk’ish but think about how much political power Sempra Energy has. Those are the kind of people meeting at the Marriott in the Gaslamp Quarter. These are the people that keep the lights on.

At 9:00 AM the San Diego County Board of Supervisors is meeting about their proposed budgets for the next two-years, regulating e-cigarettes and fighting Alzheimer’s disease.

San Diego City Council is also meeting at 9:00. They’re continuing the hearing on next years proposed budget. Infrastructure and public works are the topics du-jour.

This afternoon at 1:00 the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners is talking about what they can do the deal with San Diego’s homeless problem and developing Chula Vista’s bay front.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection or CAL FIRE is talking to the press at 11:30 this morning about Wildfire Awareness Week at their San Diego headquarters on Jamacha Road at 11:30 AM.

Tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is celebrating the district’s Teachers of the Year at the Lewis Middle School auditorium.

And finally tonight at 5:00 San Diego County’s Office of Education is honoring several student filmmakers at the 13th annual Innovative Video in Education Awards gala. My favorite in the Kindergarten to Second grade category is “Eat, Potty, Play”

Today is day two of strong Santa Ana winds and intense heat scouting San Diego County. Yesterday winds topped 100 miles per hour at one point. The National Weather Service says the winds are strongest in the morning and afternoons. A Red Flag Warning hasn’t been issued for San Diego yet. However Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside to the north of San Diego do have one.

Today Cal Fire and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing are training together at Camp Pendleton. It’s starting in the afternoon … Of course if a brush fire breaks out the training could be postponed.

This morning at 9:00 a report on how the arts in San Diego impacts the economy is being released at the Media Arts Center

The Bicycle Coalition and the San Diego Association of Governments are hosting a bike ride 9:00 AM followed by a news conference at 10 am. It’s all to kick off for National Bicycle Month.

This morning at 10:00 the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA is giving tours of their ship that survey’s fisheries. The ship is set to be commissioned tomorrow and will be based in San Diego.

Also at 10:00 AM County Supervisor Ron Roberts is bragging to the press about his annual lawnmower exchange. This Saturday Roberts is helping to give people a $100 voucher for an eclectic lawn mower in exchange for their gas-powered one.

And finally tonight at 6:00 the Mexi’cayotl Indio Cultural Center is hosting a free showcase of Aztec dancing at Chula Vista High School.

An East San Diego County fire that blackened 250 acres is still burning as of last reporting. The Lyons Fire named for the Lyons Peak area where it is burning is 10% contained this morning. Cal Fire says it started at around 1:00 PM yesterday and the cause is still under investigation. As of last night at 7:15, San Diego Sheriff’s Office says no structures are being threatened and residents are being allowed back to their homes. However the fire continues to burn in the hilly area east of El Cajon.

22-year-old Patrick Laungrath will is being sentenced today for his part in the 2010 death of San Diego Police Officer Christopher Willson. Laungrath pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and agreed to a 22 year sentence as part of his plea deal.

San Diego’s City Council is meeting today at 10:00 AM On the agenda in the Prevailing Wage proposal. This proposal would require contractors working for the city’s public works and maintenance projects to pay their employees the prevailing wage. According to Wikipedia a prevailing wage is “the hourly wage, usual benefits and overtime, paid to the majority of workers, laborers, and mechanics within a particular area” Last time this came before the city council it passed 5-4 and the vote was split along party lines. Democrats are in favor and Republicans opposed.

At 9:00 Am San Diego’s County Board of Supervisors is meeting about disaster preparedness. Then at noon Supervisors Dave Roberts and Ron Roberts will be talking to the press to promote disaster readiness. With a particular mind towards San Diego’s rapidly approaching fall fire season.

This afternoon at 1:00 the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners is getting together to talk about its environmental and equal opportunity programs.

If live near Marin Corps Air Station Miramar you may hear some gunfire and explosions today. They are conducting a full-scare training exercises from noon until 4:30 this afternoon.

And finally the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is starting the Space 2013 Conference and Exposition this morning at 8:00

The Chariot fire continues to burn in East San Diego Counties Mt. Laguna. 4700 acres have burned so far in the fires 4-days. Over 1300 firefighters are on scene battling the flames that began Saturday afternoon. Several campgrounds are evacuated along with some of the people that live in the rural communities. San Diego’s American Red Cross is running an emergency shelter at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine.

This morning at 10:00 the San Diego City Council is getting together to talk about a proposal to ban the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits within city limits, unless the animal comes from a city or county animal shelter. The proposal requires pet shop owners to keep certificates showing the animal’s origin.

Also on the agenda is a resolution from Lorie Zapf to ask the Defense Department to keep the Miramar Air Show going. Because of budget cuts many air show across the country have been canceled and Zapf wants to keep ours going. She says the air show contributes $17 million to the local economy.

San Diego County’s Board of Supervisors is meeting this morning as well, but at 9:00 AM. On their agenda the employment agreements with the union that represents the Public Defenders and Probation Officers.

Tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education will start looking at way to get long serving employees who are not at retirement age to take an early retirement. They hope that getting people to retire early will help the district close a nearly 54 million dollar budget gap.

In court two arraignments and a sentencing of note

First in San Diego’s downtown courthouse the sentencing of Geronimo Polina is scheduled for 8:30 this morning. He’s been convicted of trying to carry out a Mexican Mafia hit inside San Diego County’s Donovan State Prison.

Then at 1:30 in Vista’s courthouse 67-year-old Abdula Rehman Ibrahim will be arraigned. He reportedly walked into the Escondido Police Department and confessed to stabbing his wife of 40-years.

And also at 1:30 in Vista’s courthouse the man accused of driving the car that killed an elderly couple will be arraigned. 20-year-old Earl Smith Jr is accused of driving drunk and killing the couple that was out on their daily walk, a walk that they have taken every day for at least 30-years.

And finally this morning at 8:15 San Diego Unified School District is hosting the eighth annual “Welcome to Middle School Parade” . Hundreds of students will march from Monroe Clark Middle School to Rosa Parks Elementary and back again. It should be very cute.

Over 800 firefighters are battling the Chariot Fire this morning. The fire started just before 1:00 Sunday afternoon and at last reporting has burned over 2500 acres and is 20 percent contained. Several campgrounds and some residents have been evacuated and the American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine. CAL Fire will update us as soon the sun comes up.

Today many of the holiday weekend partiers that got tickets for things like drinking in public or urinating in public can work of their tickets in San Diego’s Instant Justice program. In lieu of paying what could be hundreds of dollars in fines those with certain minor infractions can bring $40 cast to the Pacific Beach Shore Club and pick up trash all across San Diego’s beaches. Last year over 100 offenders completed nearly 550 hours of work.

San Diego’s City Council is meeting today. First this morning at 9:00 the Audit Committee is talking about proposed audits this year. Then this afternoon at 2:00 the whole council is meeting and will talk about parking restrictions on oversized vehicles and the cities Real Estate Assets Department performance.

In honor of the 19-firefighters killed fighting the Yarnell Hill fire last week the U.S. Honor Flag will arrive at San Diego’s International Airport at 11:40 AM and then be escorted by San Diego Police officers to Phoenix. The U.S. Honor Flag began when Chris Heisler brought the flag to ground zero just after 9/11. Now it makes its way around the country honoring our heroes.

A father is murdered and San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives suspect the 22-year-old son. Just before 10:00 last night deputies were called to a Spring Valley home because of a domestic disturbance. The Sheriff office says that the deputies found the father with a stab wound and the son was on the run … Deputies began their hunt. After about an hour someone was taken into custody, however at this time there is no confirmation yet that he is the son or another suspect. What I do have confirmed is that the man in custody is thought to be involved somehow. Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives will send out more info later.

This morning at 8:30 the arraignment for the man accused of kidnapping and Sexually assaulting a woman walking home in the San Diego beach community of Ocean Beach will happen.

And…Cal Fire is having its preparedness drill this morning at 8:00. Fire crews will drill and prepare in anticipation of a busy wildfire year.

Anti XL Pipeline protesters will hit the streets of Coronado this afternoon at 11:45. They are protesting outside a meeting of the American Petroleum Industry or A-P-I. The protestors say that the A-P-I is spreading misinformation about the climate and the proposed X-L Pipeline.

And this evening at 8:00 the University of California at San Diego kicks off Earth Week with a “Trashion Show”. This a fashion show with clothing made from trash.
