Reports of a possible border tunnel are coming into the news room. At this point they are unconfirmed by federal authorities. I expect more info to come out later in morning, though it will be at a trickle. Check back for more info.

San Diego Zoo’s 5-day old hippopotamus died yesterday. Zoo workers found the calf during a normal morning check in. Zoo spokesperson Christina Simmons told the press that the mother hippo, named Funani, kept her baby so close they couldn’t figure out if it was a male or female.

Yesterday teachers from the San Ysidro Education Association voted to authorize a call to strike if negotiations with the San Ysidro School District fall through. Out of the 232 members 224 voted and 220 voted to strike. Teachers say they want a reduction in class size and a one percent raise. However the district says they don’t have the money and that they have a 2 point 6 million dollar deficit.

The controversial Barrio Logan zoning plan is back in court today at 11:00 AM. Executives from the maritime industry say that the new zoning plan could hurt their business. So they went out and got enough signatures to put it on the ballot.

However activists from the Environmental Health Coalition say that they need to separate industrial and residential property and that the new plan is a compromise that the businesses helped to create. Also they say that signatures were gathered by misleading people about what the new zoning plan is.

The maritime industry says that the new plan will cost 46,000 jobs.

Two sentencings today.

The first is at 9:30 this morning in Chula Vista’s courthouse. 36-year-old Kenneth Dwight Hamilton pleaded guilty to being one of four men that participated in the murder of two teenagers at an Oceanside Park. Prosecution says that the killings were over gang turf.

At 1:30 this afternoon Treviyon Rew will hear hit fate for shooting at two men while he was trying to carjack one of them.

Viejas Indian Reservation is hosting the San Diego County Fire Chiefs Association and 750 firefighters for three-days of training. Today media day at the training starting at 9:00 am. I bet you’ll lots of local stations with stories on it tonight.

And finally tonight at 5:30 still at the Viejas Indian Reservation a new bingo hall slash shopping mall is opening up with a ribbon cutting.

A suspect is in the hospital following a high speed pursuit that ended near the San Diego / Tijuana border. Last night at 6:23 the chase began on southbound Interstate 15 near Mercy Road. Authorities say the suspect hit three patrol cars while driving away in a pickup that was thought to be stolen. The pursuit came to an end near the border after officer fired on the suspect. Authorities shut down the border for over 5 hours. The suspect is expected to recover from his injuries.

A judge will hear public comment on where to put sexually violent predator Douglas Badger this morning at 9:00 in San Diego’s downtown courthouse. Authorities have decided that 70-year-old Badger OK to release. But because he is classified as a sexually violent predator he still needs to be supervised. Badger’s original 1981 conviction is for sexually assaulting men he picked up hitchhiking. Then he picked up extra time for assaulting fellow inmates while in custody. The Department of State Hospitals has proposed placing him in a trailer in far southeastern San Diego County City of Campo. He would be just over 2 miles from an elementary school.

At 1:30 this afternoon in Vista’s courthouse Luis Bolanos is on the schedule to be arraigned for taking a handgun to Palomar College and allegedly calling Sheriff’s deputies and telling them he was going to get into a shootout with them.

And finally at 11:00 AM at Spanish Landing the environmental group Wildcoast is unveiling an app that will show the latest water quality in San Diego County beaches.

Marines from the 1st Marine Division are landing on the beach today beginning at 8:30 AM. It’s all part of a large scale training exercise called Exercise Steel Knight 2014.
Marines from multiple Marine Corps bases from Yuma to Twentynine Palms to Camp Pendleton are participating in the live-fire exercise. It includes an amphibious landing on the beach west of Camp Pendleton. So if you’re driving along the 5 freeway between zero eight thirty and thirteen hundred don’t be afraid it’s just training.

At 10:45 officials are going to show how dangerous fire can be over the holiday season. This is the annual demo where they show us how quickly the flames can engulf a Christmas tree and children’s pajamas.

At 10:30 U.S. and Mexican officials are breaking ground on a new leg of freeway expand the 905 freeway and the border. This segment is part of a larger project that hopes to ease border crossings. This part will cost about $112 million dollars.

San Diego City Council is talking about two law suit settlements this morning at 10:00 AM. One of them is from a victim of disgraced San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, and the other is from a victim of former San Diego Police Officer Anthony Arevalos. Also on the council’s agenda is a referendum to overturn the new Barrio Logan zoning regulation.

This afternoon at 1:00 The Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners is talking with the public about a climate action plan and putting a pier on Shelter Island.

San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is meeting at 5:00 tonight about Lincoln High School.

And finally … San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive starts its 23rd year with a breakfast on the USS Midway Museum at 6:00 AM. Escondido Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department are hosting the drive

A new smuggling tunnel along the San Diego Tijuana border was discovered by American and Mexican authorities. According to TijuanaPress.com the recently finished tunnel is 20 meters deep and 150 long. The entrance on the Mexican side is just over the border and near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. It is not clear if the tunnel ever saw use. U.S. federal authorities are expected to release more info today.

Tea Party members will protest at Congressman Darrell Issa’s Vista office today at noon. According to the local Tea Party, Issa has been suggesting that he wants to pass an immigration reform law that would grant the millions of undocumented immigrants working visas.

San Diego’s Interim Mayor Todd Gloria is holding his weekly chat with the media at 10:00 AM

Tassie Behrens, the mother of two toddlers that drowned in a pool at a home that was also a marijuana growing location will be arraigned this afternoon at 1:30. She’s facing drug and child endangerment charges.

At noon the group Walk San Diego is releasing its walking scores for San Diego today. Walkablity is a big part of how some property values are determined so realtors will watch closely.

And today is Halloween. There are events all over San Diego County.

At 12:30 it’s the 39th annual giant pumpkin drop off of the 11th floor of the Tioga Hall building at the University of California San Diego.

At 2:00 this afternoon Students from Holmes Elementary are leading a community parade.

At 5:00 at the Fallbrook Community Center, Lakeside Community Center, Spring Valley Center, there will be trick-or-treating, games, music, and costume contests.

And finally all day from 9:00 AM till 7:00 tonight 101 KGB is hosting its 35th annual Halloween blood drive.

Border Patrol arrests swimmer floating on over $23,000 worth of pot.

The 55-year-old man was spotted about one mile north of the US/Mexico border and about 600 yards out to sea. He was floating on a bag that had over 52 pounds of marijuana in it. The man told officials that he is a Mexican national and does not have documents to be in the US.

Authorities are looking for the driver of a pickup truck that crashed on the 5 freeway then ran off leaving his severely hurt 4-year-old son behind. At around 8:00 PM last Sunday 40-year-old Angelo Fabiani Arroyo crashed his 2004 Nisan Titan while driving south on the five near Rosecrans. His truck slammed into a guardrail and palm tree then came to a stop on its side dangling off of a retaining wall. It’s thought that Arroyo tried to free his son causing the 4-year-old to fall at least 10-feet hitting his head. The toddler is in the hospital with severe head trauma. Anyone with any info on Arroyo’s whereabouts should call California Highway Patrol at 619-220-5492.

At 8:30 this morning the group Concerned Citizens of Southern California will hear from Japan’s former Prime Minister about nuclear safety. Naoto Kan will take part in a panel discussion on the future of nuclear power in the San Diego region. The talk is open to the public on the third floor of the San Diego County Supervisors building at 1600 Pacific Highway. It will also be streamed live on the internet.

This morning at 10:00 the American Civil Liberties Union is talking to the media about a class-action lawsuit they are filing. It is what they call “challenging a widespread and dangerous practice along the U.S.-Mexico border”.

Also at 10:00 AM San Diego City Council is meeting. Two big things on the agenda:
First limiting the amount of money political parties can contribute in local elections. Second the official designation of the “Little Saigon Cultural and Commercial District”

And tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is meeting. The agenda item getting the most attention is a proposal for cafeterias to have “Meatless Mondays”.

And finally two free CPR training events today. First in Oceanside at 9:00 AM at the both the Oceanside Lifeguard Headquarters on 301 North Strand and the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 2100 Vista Way. And the last at the Carlsbad Fire Department on the corner of Carlsbad Boulevard and Pine Avenue.

This morning at 10:00 AM notorious Mexican cartel leader Eduardo Arellano Felix is expected to plead guilty in San Diego’s federal court. Eduardo is one of the four brothers that ran the Arellano Felix Organization or A-F-O. The 56-year-old is charged with money laundering, racketeering, drug trafficking, and he is believed to be responsible for at least three murders. Benjamin Arellano-Felix and Francisco Javier Arellano-Felix are in American prisons serving time for racketeering, drug trafficking and money laundering. One of the brothers … Francisco Rafael Arellano-Felix … is back in Mexico after he was imprisoned in the United States for six-years on cocaine charges.

This morning is the fifth annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast. San Diego’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Community Center is hosting the event. They will honor Oregon’s former Governor Barbara Roberts and writer Dustin Lance Black.

The Navy is getting 47 new officers today. Members of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps will get their commissions in a ceremony at the University of San Diego’s Jenny Craig Pavilion at 11 AM.

Two fun things to do tonight…First at 5:00 PM the San Diego Jazz Festival starts its three-day run at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

And finally tonight also at 5:00 the Helen Woodward Animal Center is hosting its Second Annual Puppy Prom. Puppies will compete in a Best Dressed King and Queen competition.
