This morning at 9:00 AM the San Diego Opera Board of Directors is going work on keeping the Opera open amidst crippling financial problems. Last month the board said it would have to shutter the 50-year-old institution unless they were able to raise $1 million. Critics of the Opera say board members are paid too much and that a culture of irresponsible financial stewardship is the cause. Last week the Opera set up an escrow account for donations but they have only been able to raise a tenth of what they need. Over 400 people depend on the Opera for work and city officials say it has a $7 million dollar impact on the city’s economy.
Across the country patrons for opera companies have dried up. Companies in New York City, Boston, Cleveland, Baltimore, San Antonio and Orange County have all closed.
Two important things in court today…
First at 9:00 AM a group of defendants that were arrested as part of a massive county wide sweep of suspected gang members are in San Diego Courthouse’s Department 37. Last week over 500 law enforcement officials rounded up 45-members of what U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy called “a particularly volatile and violent” gang.
This afternoon at 1:30 in Chula Vista Courthouse’s Department 16 Pearl Quinones will hear her fate for pleading guilty to felony conspiracy in connection to her job as a Sweetwater Union High School District board member. The 61-year-old is one of 15-people indicted on a “pay for play” scandal between contractors and officials from three different school districts. Many of the other defendants have already pleaded guilty including construction exec Henry Amigable who admitted to trading gifts for influence.
This morning at 9:30 Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten are dedicating a new joint-use play field at Theodore Roosevelt Middle School.
At 2:00 this afternoon San Diego City Council is talking about the city’s contract with Rural/Metro Corporation. Rural/Metro Corporation is an ambulance and fire services company. In San Diego the company is contracted for ambulance serviced.
And finally today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. At the San Diego Jewish Academy students are remembering victims by reading the names of 10,000 of the children murdered in the Holocaust. They say that while 1.6 million children were killed there isn’t enough time in the day to read all the names. The kids will be reading from 7:55 through the end of school.
