The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology at UC San Diego will be known as the “Qualcomm Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, the UC San Diego Division of Calit2,” or Qualcomm Institute for short.

The San Diego maker of cell phone technology has provided $26 million to the institute over a dozen years.

“This recognition is much deserved given the important roles that Qualcomm and the Qualcomm Foundation have played in helping us to build and cement the institute’s reputation as a world leader in technologies that benefit society,” UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. “The new name is a fitting tribute to Qualcomm as Calit2’s largest industry supporter and one of the main employers of our alumni.”

onofreSAN ONOFRE, Calif. — U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials are scheduled to meet with Southern California Edison executives Wednesday to discuss proposed license amendments that would allow the utility to restart the troubled San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station at 70 percent power.

No decision on a restart will be made at the meeting in Rockville, Md., according to the NRC.

Edison’s draft license amendment seeks to change a technical section requiring structural integrity of steam generators from “across the full range of normal operating conditions” to compliance at 70 percent power. It also includes a promise that power would not exceed that amount, which equates to 3,438 megawatts thermal.

Another license section, which currently states that the reactors are allowed to operate at 100 percent power, would be changed to 70 percent power, or 2,406.6 megawatts thermal.

Edison requested that the NRC rule on the proposed amendments by May 24…
