San Diego is remembering its veterans at several events today.

First at 7:00 AM the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Warrior Foundation 5-K run starts over at Naval Training Center Park.

In Lakeside at 9:00 AM the 68th annual Memorial Day Reading of the Names at the Carter-Smith Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

At 10:00 AM there is the dramatic looking Memorial Day service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

In Oceanside also at 10:00 the Veterans Association of North County is hosting its service at their headquarters at 1617 Mission Avenue.

On board the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum at 10:00 AM radio stations 100 point 7 Jack FM and KFMB are hosting an all-day blood drive.

At 10:30 the Kensington Social and Athletic Club is hosting the annual Kensington Holiday at Home Parade in the historic San Diego neighborhood.

And in Encinitas at 11:00 AM the American Legion Post 416 is hosting its Memorial Day remembrance.

Those are just a few of the events from all over San Diego County. The beaches are sure to be filled and almost all government offices are closed.

And finally this afternoon at 4:00 the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is looking for your opinion on some new exhibitions ideas. They are hosting some focus groups. Today’s group is for adults without children.

Police are asking everyone to keep their eyes out for a missing disabled 49-year-old man. Charles Ahnger has Down syndrome, early onset dementia, and limited ability to communicate. Ahnger went missing while on a day trip to Fashion Valley Mall with his social worker and other challenged adults. Police say that it’s possible he got on a bus and just rode away. Ahnger is a white male, five feet tall, 188 pounds, brown hair and eyes. Anyone with any info please call San Diego Police at (619) 531-2000.

This morning at 8:00 the San Diego 2024 Summer Olympic Exploratory Committee’s President Bill Earley and Chairman Vincent Mudd are meeting with a local group that encourages minorities to be leaders called LEAD San Diego. They’ll be in the End Zone Club at Qualcomm Stadium.

Among the issues they’re talking about …

What is being done to ensure that we meet the technical requirements?

What we can expect hosting the Olympics to do for our region?

How can we pay for it?

At 8:00 AM 20-years of the North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA is the topic at the Sanford Consortium Auditorium on Torrey Pines Scenic Dr. Some of the people speaking at the event are Janet Napolitano, UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and former Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Arturo Sarukhan.

At 9:30 this morning the Center on Policy Initiatives is releasing its report about how much it costs for a family to make ends meet in San Diego.

At 10:30 AM newly inaugurated Mayor Kevin Faulconer is having his first press conference. He’s talking about how to archive old city’s emails, a visit to Tijuana, and he’s introducing his communications team.

This afternoon at 2:00 protesters are rallying for a raise in the minimum wage. The group called the Coalition for Labor and Community Solidarity is targeting McDonald’s restaurants across the country. In San Diego they’ll be at 1260 Park Avenue

In court today

Disgraced former San Diego Police officer Anthony Arevalos is asking to be released pending his appeal at 9:00 AM in San Diego’s courthouse. Arevalos was convicted of sexually assaulting women during traffic stops. Just last month he had two counts overturned because some evidence wasn’t given to the defense.

Then at 1:30 in Vista’s courthouse Michael Young is being arraigned for beating his brother to death. Two fundraisers tonight …

First at 5:30 raising money for disadvantaged and at-risk youth is the goal at the 44th annual Barrio Station benefit dinner.

And second Employment and Community Options is hosting “Taste of Our Community” to raise money to help the disabled get jobs and live independently.

Today is the first day for the 8th Annual San Diego FIRST® Robotics Competition at the Valley View Casino Center.

High school’ers from all over the world will test their robots in some unusual and interesting ways. First thing from 8:00 AM till noon the robots are inspected then they get to practice the rest of the afternoon.

And finally tonight at 7:00 it’s the first San Diego Film Awards. Filmmakers, cast and crew are crowding into the Horton Grand Theater to honor each other’s work.

High surf and strong rip currents are scouring San Diego’s west facing beaches through noon Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Surf will be three to five feet with the occasional six footer. The big surf combined with the extra high tides is will combine to create the strong rip currents. Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water till this is over.

San Diego City Council is meeting all day today. First at 9:00 AM the Audit Committee is talking about an audit of police patrol performance. Then at 2:00 the full council gets together and top of the agenda is an increase in housing impact fees. This is a fee from non-residential construction that is used to help pay for affordable housing.

At noon San Diego County is releasing its Prescription Drug Abuse Report Card.

This morning at 8:00 AM the crime lab from Chula Vista’s Police Department is showing high school’ers how math is used to fight crime.

And finally at 6:30 tonight in the San Diego Public Library downtown the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg address is being honored with a re-reading of the famous speech by author and columnist Richard Lederer.

More than 100 cars had their windows broken over this past weekend in Chula Vista and a suspect or suspects are still on the loose. Chula Vista Police think a pellet gun was used and at least one man shot. The suspect vehicle is described as an older model green G-M-C van. Anyone with any info should call the Chula Vista Police Department at 619-691-5151.

San Diego City Council Budget Committee is meeting this morning at 9:00 about a report from the city’s Department of Information Technology and the agreement the city has with Sprint for wireless service.

El Cajon has a 1 point 4 million dollar grant to spend on community development and wants its residents to chime in on how to spend the money. They are meeting tonight at 6:00 at Renette Park Community Center.

San Diego State University is hosting a symposium about stem cell research and how it is advancing science starting at 5:30 tonight in the Donald P Shiley BioScience Center on campus.

Questions about the Syrian conflict will be answered by 5 University of California San Diego professors tonight at 5:00 at UCSD’s Robinson Auditorium.

And finally … tonight at 7:00 is the start of the 12th annual San Diego Film Festival. The first film is “12 Years as a Slave” after which there is a party at the Gaslamp Reading Theater.

Today is day three of Filner watch. San Diego’s infamous mayor is negotiating with the City Attorney, Civil Attorney Gloria Allred, and the city council about the conditions of his resignation. No one, but those in on the negotiations, know exactly what the discussions are about or what conditions Filner wants met for him to resign. The mediator, a retired federal judge, asked everyone to stay quiet.

However the mediation may become a moot point if the recall effort gathers enough signatures. Some think they will have the just under 102,000 signatures by the end of the week.

Will that change Filner’s negotiations?

Or will it make it more difficult to get him to out of office?

This afternoon at 3:00 Scientists from the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute are releasing the two millionth White Sea bass fitted with a tag. The tags help researchers track the fish and aids in their effort to fight the Pacific Ocean’s rapidly declining fish stocks.

And this afternoon at 5:00 Chula Vista’s Eastlake Little League All-Stars will take on the Westport Little League in the lead up to the Little League World Series. The game is going to be shown on ESPN at 5:00 tonight. The winner will go on to the U.S. Championship game this Saturday.

Tijuana’s Little League champs are up against Tokyo’s today at 1:00 PM in Williamsport. Should Chula Vista and Tijuana win there next two games they could face each other in the Little League World Series this Sunday

A man registering as a “former Sexually Violent Predator” or S-V-P is living in downtown San Diego near Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter. John Kreischer is classified as an S-V-P because of multiple counts of forcible rape in 1977, assault with intent to commit rape in 1981, two counts of kidnapping and attempted rape from 1988 and failing to register as a Sex Offender in 2009. He is living in the Plaza Hotel at 1037 4th Avenue in downtown San Diego. Kreischer is being watched by a G-P-S monitoring system, is in compliance with his registration requirements, and is not wanted by law enforcement at this time.

This morning at 9:00 Rashon Abernathy, Seandell Jones, and Shaquille Jordan will be sentenced for murdering a college student they lured using a Craig’s List ad. The victim thought he was buying a laptop but he and his girlfriend were robbed then following a brief car chase he was shot and killed. Abernathy is looking at 65 years to life … while Jones and Jordan are facing 50 years to life.

The fight between the San Diego Mayor’s office and the Tourism Marketing District Board of Directors is hot again. Yesterday Mayor Bob Filner refused to release funds to the T-M-D because he says “We will issue their money when they hold up their end of the bargain, for example, approving payments to the Balboa Park Centennial.” Today at 9:00 AM the TMD is holding an open door meeting to talk about the funding dispute … they say that TMD employees will have to be laid off unless the Mayor releases the money. The meeting is at the Catamaran Hotel, Aviary Ballroom, 3999 Mission Blvd.

This morning at 10:45 organizers of the Rock n Roll Marathon and Half-Marathon will talk to the media. Topics will include security, race-day closures, and the new route.

And this afternoon at 3:30 Officials from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography will talk about awarding James Cameron the 2013 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. The famous filmmaker is being honored for donating an unmanned deep sea diver called “Lander” to the institute. Other prize winners are Walter Cronkite and Jane Goodall. So he’s in very good company.

Investigators are looking into several bomb threats made toward a Muslim school. An unknown woman left several threatening phone messages saying things like “I’m going to throw a bomb in your (expletive) school”. The school teaches kindergarten to eight-grade and is reviewing its security protocol.

Day two of the University of California health care workers protest starts at 6:00 AM. In San Diego and all across the state members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 will hit the picket lines. They want a new contract, better pay, and better retirement system.

This afternoon at 2:00 San Diego City Council’s Land Use and Housing Committee is meeting. They are talking about the proposed arts and entertainment district in downtown. Then at 6:00 tonight the council is taking public comment on Mayor Bob Filner’s proposed budget. Yesterday the Mayor said we’ll have 13.6 million dollars more in the budget than originally thought.

In San Diego County Courts today three things to note.

First the man accused of beating his dog to death for digging up a tree is being arraigned at 8:00 AM in the El Cajon courthouse.

Then in the San Diego Courthouse at 9:00 AM the accused freeway shooters defense begins its case

And also in San Diego a lawsuit continues over whether or not Yoga classes are religion therefore teaching them in public school violates the separation of church and state.

At 10:30 this morning Education experts are touring the San Diego Unified School District. The District is up for the $550,000 2013 Broad Prize for Urban Education. Then at 11:15 a rep from the Broad Prize is talking to the press at Kearny High School.

Chula Vista is starting its free swim lessons today at 11:30 AM. Kids will learn to swim at “Operation Splash” at the Parkway Aquatic Center in Chula Vista.

Finally tonight at 5:00 Buzz Aldrin will be singing copies of his new book at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
