AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for May 6, 2014

This morning at 8:00 power company executives from across the country are taking about how they quote “operate, plan, build, regulate and invest in electric power transmission systems in Western North America” at the TransForum West conference. At first blush this may sound a bit wonk’ish but think about how much political power Sempra Energy has. Those are the kind of people meeting at the Marriott in the Gaslamp Quarter. These are the people that keep the lights on.

At 9:00 AM the San Diego County Board of Supervisors is meeting about their proposed budgets for the next two-years, regulating e-cigarettes and fighting Alzheimer’s disease.

San Diego City Council is also meeting at 9:00. They’re continuing the hearing on next years proposed budget. Infrastructure and public works are the topics du-jour.

This afternoon at 1:00 the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners is talking about what they can do the deal with San Diego’s homeless problem and developing Chula Vista’s bay front.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection or CAL FIRE is talking to the press at 11:30 this morning about Wildfire Awareness Week at their San Diego headquarters on Jamacha Road at 11:30 AM.

Tonight at 5:00 the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is celebrating the district’s Teachers of the Year at the Lewis Middle School auditorium.

And finally tonight at 5:00 San Diego County’s Office of Education is honoring several student filmmakers at the 13th annual Innovative Video in Education Awards gala. My favorite in the Kindergarten to Second grade category is “Eat, Potty, Play”

San Diego Political Podcast Movies and Politics

This time on San Diego Political Podcast I sat down and talked to Josh Board at Polite Provisions and we spend the better part of an hour talking about movie and politics.

Meatbal Sub

Josh ate a massive pork sandwich and was a pleasure to hang out with.

He doesn’t think movies play an important role politically while I think they do.

Oh and about 3 minutes in we talked about the Equal Time for more info on that go HERE.

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for May 31, 2013

A man registering as a “former Sexually Violent Predator” or S-V-P is living in downtown San Diego near Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter. John Kreischer is classified as an S-V-P because of multiple counts of forcible rape in 1977, assault with intent to commit rape in 1981, two counts of kidnapping and attempted rape from 1988 and failing to register as a Sex Offender in 2009. He is living in the Plaza Hotel at 1037 4th Avenue in downtown San Diego. Kreischer is being watched by a G-P-S monitoring system, is in compliance with his registration requirements, and is not wanted by law enforcement at this time.

This morning at 9:00 Rashon Abernathy, Seandell Jones, and Shaquille Jordan will be sentenced for murdering a college student they lured using a Craig’s List ad. The victim thought he was buying a laptop but he and his girlfriend were robbed then following a brief car chase he was shot and killed. Abernathy is looking at 65 years to life … while Jones and Jordan are facing 50 years to life.

The fight between the San Diego Mayor’s office and the Tourism Marketing District Board of Directors is hot again. Yesterday Mayor Bob Filner refused to release funds to the T-M-D because he says “We will issue their money when they hold up their end of the bargain, for example, approving payments to the Balboa Park Centennial.” Today at 9:00 AM the TMD is holding an open door meeting to talk about the funding dispute … they say that TMD employees will have to be laid off unless the Mayor releases the money. The meeting is at the Catamaran Hotel, Aviary Ballroom, 3999 Mission Blvd.

This morning at 10:45 organizers of the Rock n Roll Marathon and Half-Marathon will talk to the media. Topics will include security, race-day closures, and the new route.

And this afternoon at 3:30 Officials from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography will talk about awarding James Cameron the 2013 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. The famous filmmaker is being honored for donating an unmanned deep sea diver called “Lander” to the institute. Other prize winners are Walter Cronkite and Jane Goodall. So he’s in very good company.

The Sheltering Sky

AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for April 8, 2013

[youtube:http://youtu.be/7zYbbJ521fE%5D

Today is day four of the hotel workers hunger strike. It all began when the Hilton hotel started using e-verify to confirm the immigration status of their workers. Six workers quit and nine have yet to be verified. The nine say they are allowed to work in the states and that they only make $8.40 and an hour … all combined this is causing their families great pain. The nine are hopping to find out today at 5 pm if they can go back to work.

Six to nine foot waves will pound San Diego beaches today according to the National Weather Service. A six to nine foot wave means theses waves will have 12-18 foot wave faces. That’s huge. Along with the high surf rip currents are expected as well. Together they are very dangerous, just watch from the shore today.

Opening statements in the case against two men allegedly caught on surveillance video abusing an autistic man begins this morning at 9:00 AM in Vista.

At 9:30 the USS Cowpens is arriving at Naval Base San Diego. The Cowpens has been based in Japan for 13-years.

Sentencing at 1:30 this afternoon for the man shot by police inside a movie theater after he threatened his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint.
