San Diego’s First Medical Marijuana Permit Faces Last Bureaucratic Hurdle

San Diego could have its first legal medical marijuana dispensary this week, but the pot pioneer and his opposition have fought at every step in the process.

The medical marijuana collective A Green Alternative is set to become San Diego’s first officially permitted medical pot shop, almost 20 years after voters passed Proposition 215, allowing for medical cannabis.

David Blair holds a doctorate in business, teaches business ethics at San Diego State University and is the chief executive officer of A Green Alternative.

San Diego’s infamous former mayor Bob Filner will officially be sentenced this morning at 9:00. 71-year-old Filner pled guilty to grabbing and fondling three women while in office. Reportedly he’s going to be on probation for three years and spend three months in home confinement. Officially he is guilty of one felony count of false imprisonment and two misdemeanor counts of battery. If he violates the terms of his probation Filner could spend six-months in jail. KSWB FOX5 plans to carry the sentencing live.

San Diego’s City Council is busy today. First at 9:00 AM the Infrastructure Committee is meeting about a report on our sidewalks. Then at 2:00 PM the whole council is meeting and on the agenda; San Diego’s five-year financial outlook and the first quarter budget report.

This afternoon at 3:30 salaries for San Diego’s City Council member and Mayor are top of the agenda for the City of San Diego Salary Setting Commission.

San Diego City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner and Lorie Zapf are talking to the press about creating a citywide bicycle network and the 45 recommendations from the Water Policy Implementation Task Force at 10:00 AM.

And finally at 11:00 AM many of San Diego’s law enforcement agencies are coming together to release their annual marijuana eradication campaign results. They focused on indoor grow operations and hash-oil extractions that caused explosions.

Three people are under arrest and accused of using an elaborate smuggling tunnel along the San Diego / Tijuana border to run drugs. The tunnel ran from one non-descript warehouse in Tijuana across the American/Mexican border to another non-descript warehouse in the community of Otay Mesa. It is about 20 meters underground and runs about 200 meters long and was equipped with a rail system and ventilation. Along with the three arrests authorities also seized 325 pounds of cocaine and eight tons of marijuana.

This morning at 8:30 in El Cajon’s courthouse 23-year-old April Carole Thompson will be sentenced for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Thompson was drunk when she drove the wrong way on highway 52 slamming head on into another car killing 25-year-old Jayme Alan Midlam. Thompson is facing 10-years in prison.

Today at 1:30 PM in San Diego’s downtown courthouse Daryl Ray Cody will be arraigned and accused of obstructing a peace officer and possessing a controlled substance. A Sheriff’s Deputy was trying to evict Cody from a downtown apartment. Authorities say Cody refused to follow orders then the Deputy says he saw what he thought was a gun barrel and fired at Cody, shooting Cody in the leg. Turned out to be a three foot long plastic tube.

Another immigration reform protest is set to happen at Representative Darrell Issa’s Vista office today at 11:00 AM. Yesterday’s was anti-immigration reform and today is pro-immigration reform. San Diego Faith Leaders and dream act atavists will give Issa’s office new polling data that they say shows that Americans want immigration reform.

At the San Diego Naval Base at 9:15 this morning the U.S.S. Thach will be decommissioned after 30 years of service. Commander Hans Lynch proudly says that the Thach and her crew accomplished a lot in her long career “From conducting counter-narcotics operations to maintaining freedom on the high seas, the ship has been through a lot”.

And finally today at 12:30 this afternoon Veterans are replacing 50 worn out flags at the Avenue of Flags at the Miramar National Cemetery.

Border Patrol arrests swimmer floating on over $23,000 worth of pot.

The 55-year-old man was spotted about one mile north of the US/Mexico border and about 600 yards out to sea. He was floating on a bag that had over 52 pounds of marijuana in it. The man told officials that he is a Mexican national and does not have documents to be in the US.

Today is San Diego Mayor Bob Filner’s first day back at work after leaving for “intensive therapy” to deal with his problems with woman. So far 16-woman have come forward and accused Filner of things ranging from sexual harassment, putting them in headlocks and trying to kiss them, to acting bizarrely towards them. Mayor Filner was supposed to be in therapy for two weeks of “intensive therapy” but he left a week early and spent the second week off.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the recall Filner signature drive. They need 102,000 signatures to get the recall on the ballot and they have less than a month to get them

This morning at 9:30 in federal court Eduardo Arellano Felix will be sentenced for money laundering. For over 20-years Eduardo and his brothers ran the infamous Arellano Felix drug cartel in Tijuana. The cartel is controlled drug smuggling into the United States from Tijuana and they made hundreds of millions of dollars for their efforts.

At 8:00 Thousands of students are back at class in San Diego’s community colleges. This marks San Diego City College’s 100th year and Mesa College’s 50th.

And finally today at 11:30 AM Olympian Erin Hamlin from USA luge team is doing some testing in the San Diego Air and Space Museum’s wind tunnel. Hamlin is training for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

San Diego’s Mayor and City Attorney are at it again. City Attorney Jan Goldsmith is now accusing Mayor Filner of allowing what the City Attorney is calling illegal marijuana dispensaries to proliferate.

In a press conference Goldsmith said “…the mayor has refused to allow case referrals to our office…”

In response the Mayor said “I’ve always enforced the law, that’s my job…”

The San Diego City Council asked Goldsmith to draft new pot shop zoning regulations to replace the current one. That is expected to take about a month.

The District Attorney is expected to file murder charges against the man accused of beating a prominent San Diego architect to death. 31-year-old Higinio Soriano Salgado worked for 56-year-old Grahm Downes and was at Downes’s house for a party and they got into a fight Salgado beat Downes so severely he is now brain dead. Salgado … arrested just after the fight ….will be in court this morning for a status conference when the new more severe charges will be filed.

This morning at 9:30 San Diego’s District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis is talking to the press about charges she’s filing against a couple that she says conned hundreds of senior citizens out of $1.9 Million. The couple will be arraigned this afternoon.

Protesters are marching at San Diego’s Federal Building today at noon. They are protesting the Department of Homeland Security’s employment audits. Protesters say that many of the people being fired for not having the proper papers would qualify as “citizenship path worthy” under a comprehensive immigration bill. They would like the President to stop the audits until the bill is passed.

This morning at 9:00 the San Diego Association of Governments Board of Directors is meeting and they will talk about extending the San Diego Trolley’s Blue line.

Today for Arbor Day there are two big events

First at 9:00 AM on campus at the University of California at San Diego volunteers will plant 23 Coast Live Oaks, 22 Torrey Pines and 19 Canary Island Pines.

Then at 10:30 the Friends of Balboa Park are having a “Tree Celebration” where people from San Diego Gas & Electric are going to talk about how to plant trees so they don’t interfere with underground or overhead electrical lines.

“Agents Seize More Than $420,000 of Cocaine at I-5 Checkpoint

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — U.S. Border Patrol agents intercepted a narcotics smuggling attempt yesterday afternoon at the I-5 checkpoint near San Clemente resulting in the seizure of more than 38 pounds of cocaine.

Agents encountered a 24-year-old male United States citizen driving a 2006 Ford Fusion at approximately 12:20 p.m., at the I-5 checkpoint. Agents became suspicious of the man’s nervous demeanor and referred him for a secondary inspection. A Border Patrol K-9 team performed a cursory inspection of the vehicle resulting in an alert. Agents searched the vehicle and discovered 12 bundles of cocaine concealed in the vehicle’s rocker panels. The cocaine weighed 38.45 pounds and had an estimated street value of $422,790.

The suspected smuggler and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. The vehicle was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.”
