AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for May 16, 2014

Last night Escondido Police announced the arrest of two people for arson. A 17-year-old boy whose name is being withheld and 19-year-old Isaiah Silva are in custody for allegedly setting at least two fires. A witness called police reportedly while watching two people matching the suspect’s description in the south Escondido Boulevard area start a fire at around 6:30 PM last night. The witness put the fire out.

Then at around 7:30 another person called saying they were watching the two people matching the suspect’s description trying to start a fire near Kit Carson Park. That witness chased the suspects. Police caught the two suspects a short time later.

This morning the Cocos Fire in San Marcos is still burning and is only 5 percent contained. According to Cal Fire it has scorched 1200 acres and three homes were lost. But this fire too is weakening. Some of the evacuation orders have been lifted and I expect that the fire’s containment number will go up after sunrise when firefighters are able to make a new assessment. The Poinsettia fire in Carlsbad is 85 percent contained. This fire destroyed many homes including on 18-unit complex. Damage at this time is estimated at $22.5 million.
