AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for April 14, 2014

Early this morning at 12:42 San Diego Fire Dispatchers got several called about several fires in the Grant Hill and Logan Heights neighborhoods. Turns out there were around 7 fires all in fires in trash cans, planters and tree fires all near 28th, 29th and 30th street between the 94 freeway and Commercial St. No one was hurt, no homes were damaged, no arrests have been made yet and investigators are working it.

The National Weather Service says that high winds with gusts up to 60-miles-per-hour are possible near San Diego’s coastal foothills today. They say to watch out for broken tree limbs and other debris falling into the streets.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer is presenting his budget proposal for the coming fiscal year to the city council this afternoon. But before that at 12:30 he’s talking to the press about it.

The nearly three billion dollar budget proposal includes $300 million dollars for quote “capital projects”. That stuff like fixing sidewalks, streetlights, fire stations and storm drains.

The Mayor wants to increase that kind of infrastructure spending by 66 percent. Then the City Council is going to pour over the budget proposal and make the changes they want. They need to approve the budget by June and it’ll take effect on July 1st.

The City Council is meeting about more than just Faulconer’s budget proposal this afternoon. At 2:00 they are also looking at possibly revising the Purchasing and Contracting dollar amounts that require council approval and the city’s undergrounding program. The undergrounding program is about the city moving power, phone and other overhead cables underground.

And finally at 7:00 paleoclimatologist Jeffrey Severinghous is talking about climactic history at the Birch Aquarium. He did his research buy drilling thousands of feet into ice sheets and analyzing the layers. I wonder what he has to say about climate change.
