USS Vandegrift sailors talk about rescuing family
[trib_ndn vid=25797728]SAN DIEGO — The USS Vandegrift pulled into port Wednesday afternoon carrying a crew pleased with how they carried out their unexpected mission of rescuing a family stranded at sea.
“I will say this is not something you train for. The fact my crew was able to turn on a dime — get ready for a real-life rescue mission was amazing,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cdr. Daryl Robbin.
The USS Vandegrift was off the coast of Southern California Friday when it was re-directed south to help Eric and Charlotte Kaufman and their two daughters — Cora and Lyra, ages 3 and 1. The family’s 36-foot boat, the Rebel Heart, lost power about 1,000 miles off the coast of Cabo San Lucas and their youngest daughter fell ill.
