AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for February 12, 2014

San Diego elected a new mayor yesterday. With all precincts reporting Kevin Faulconer won with 137,296 or 54.5 percent of the votes. And David Alvarez lost with 114,478 or 45.8 percent of the votes. Both the candidates are city councilmen.

Faulconer has 3-years left on his term and while the city council is technically non-partisan both parties support their members over others on the council. Faulconer’s replacement will be chosen by the council and its Democratic majority grows from 5/4 to 5/3 with Faulconer winning the Mayor’s office. Now there is talk that a Democrat will be chosen to fill the empty seat creating a city council with a veto proof 6 to 3 Democratic majority.

On the heels of the mayoral election this afternoon at 1:15 Amy Redding is officially starting her campaign for San Diego Unified School District Board of Education. She’s signature gathering to get on the ballot.

This afternoon at 2:00 San Diego City Council’s Smart Growth and Land Use Committee is meeting and they’re talking about the municipal codes for food trucks and reducing San Diego’s homeless population.
