Marine awarded Silver Star for leading counterattack
[trib_ndn vid=25429955]SAN DIEGO – Marine Major Robb McDonald received the Silver Star at Camp Pendleton Monday for his role in repulsing a Taliban surprise attack at a Marine base in Afghanistan.
The secretary of the Navy awarded the nation’s third highest honor to 37-year-old McDonald for his extraordinary leadership during the attack at Camp Bastion, a Marine Corps air base, in September 2012.
After McDonald’s commanding officer Lt. Col. Christopher Raible was killed by Taliban insurgents on base, he killed one Taliban fighter and organized a counter attack.
Military investigators said at least 15 Taliban fighters dressed in US military style uniforms cut through the fence and blew up six fighter jets.
McDonald led several groups of Marines away from attack area and directed two helicopter strikes that killed several insurgents, according to his award citation.
