Gun owner to stand trial in boy’s death
SAN DIEGO — A Scripps Ranch man will stand trial in the death of a neighbor boy who was mortally wounded as he and the defendant’s daughter played with a loaded gun they found in the man’s garage.
Todd Francis faces seven years and eight months in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter, child abuse and criminal storage of a firearm. He’ll be back in court Dec. 5 for arraignment in Superior Court.
Eric Klyaz, 10, and Francis’ 9-year-old daughter were playing with the gun in her garage on Ivy Hill Drive on June 4 when the gun went off, killing Klyaz. A neighbor who heard the gunshot said the girl was crying and the little boy was crumpled on the ground having been shot in the chest.
Klyaz died at Rady Children’s Hospital a short time later.
