Investigators search for church arsonist

Santa Sophia ChurchSPRING VALLEY, Calif. — Authorities Wednesday were looking for clues to identify who set a fire at a Catholic church in Spring Valley.

The fire at Santa Sophia Church at 9800 San Juan St. was reported shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to San Diego County sheriff’s Bomb-Arson Unit Detective Anthony Portillo. Cal Fire sent five engines to the church and crews knocked out the fire within 10 minutes. No one was injured.

Cal Fire investigators and sheriff’s deputies believed the fire was suspicious, so they called the sheriff’s bomb arson squad.

“Investigators determined the fire to be arson,” Portillo said.

A damage estimate was pending.
