San Diego Zoo names baby sloth


slothSan Diego — (CNN) Xena… it’s the name of a warrior princess, and the newest member of the San Diego Zoo.

The public, with over one thousand votes, chose to name this five-month-old, two-toed sloth Xena; that’s short for Xenarthra.

Xena is currently training to meet people as an animal ambassador.

Sloths are slow-moving, plant-eating mammals that are active at night and are usually found in tropical forests.
Their sharp claws are three to four inches long.

Firefighters FlamesSAN DIEGO — A red flag warning signaling a heightened risk of wildfire will be in force Friday in San Diego-area valley and mountain areas due to warm, windy and extremely dry conditions, meteorologists said.

The warning will be in effect from 8 a.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Sunday because of a “critical” combustion risk resulting from strong Santa Ana winds out of the northeast coupled with humidity levels dipping below 15 percent and possibly into the single digits, according to the  National Weather Service.

By this evening and into Saturday morning, sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with peak gusts of 55 to 70 mph will sweep canyons and foothill valley areas downwind of Cuyamaca Lake and Hellhole Canyon in Valley Center, the NWS said in an advisory.

A red flag warning is the most serious fire-related caution issued by the NWS.

DA: Mexican gangster guilty of ‘unprecedented carnage’


SAN DIEGO — Two leaders of the Mexican drug trafficking gang known as Los Palillos participated in several kidnappings, nine murders and other crimes in San Diego County between 2004 to 2007, a prosecutor said Thursday.

After more than six months of testimony, Deputy District Attorney Mark Amador began the prosecution’s closing argument in the trial of 34-year-old Jorge Rojas Lopez and 33-year-old Juan Estrada Gonzalez.

Court, gavel, trialRojas Lopez is charged in nine murders; Estrada-Gonzalez in six. They each face the death penalty if convicted.

“This unprecedented carnage and savagery cannot stand,” Amador told the jury.

After the Arellano Felix drug organization killed Rojas Lopez’s brother in 2002, he and other members of Los Palillos fled Mexico and set up their drug- running operation in Kansas City and San Diego, Amador said.

The elderly woman went missing last week and homicide detectives have been investigating all week. Mansury’s boyfriend is also reportedly under arrest Officials will hold a news conference this morning at 9:30 at San Diego Police headquarters.

San Diego’s valley and mountain areas have a higher than normal risk of fire and a Red Flag warning is in effect from 11:00 AM today through 8:00 Sunday night. It’s going to get dry, hot, and windy with a Santa Anna condition impacting our region. Winds will gust from 55 to 70 miles per hour and a high wind warning is in affect through Sunday morning at 11:00.

San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister is talking to the press about his office mailing out property tax bills and how to pay them, this morning at 11:00. In San Diego’s downtown courthouse at 1:30 this afternoon Georgette Cervantes Cramer will be arraigned for murdering her boyfriend and engaging police in a seven hour long stand-off.

And finally this morning at 11:00 the 40th annual La Mesa’s Oktoberfest starts. The party brings thousands out to the small San Diego County City wear the beer and music flow.
