Aguirre launches mayoral campaign
SAN DIEGO — Former City Attorney Mike Aguirre launched his campaign to become San Diego’s next mayor Friday with a news conference in Balboa Park’s FDR Grove.
“Returning the city of San Diego to the people of San Diego is the reason I want to be your next mayor,” Aguirre told reporters.
Aguirre told Fox 5 nearly two weeks ago that he intended to join the crowded field of mayoral candidates. He filed an intention statement with the City Clerk’s office and pulled nomination papers earlier this week.
Nearly three dozen potential candidates have declared their intent to run in the Nov. 19 special election to finish out the final three years of Filner’s term, according to the City Clerk’s office.
City Councilmen Kevin Faulconer and David Alvarez are also in the running, as are Nathan Fletcher and Lori Saldana, both former members of the state Assembly.
