Scripps pediatrician on leave after drug arrest


SAN DIEGO — A Scripps-affiliated pediatrician was on administrative leave Friday following his arrest on suspicion of drug possession outside the Burning Man festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.

Dr. Bret Gerber, 47, was arrested in California’s Mono County during a traffic stop Aug. 24, when police found ecstasy, psilocybin mushrooms and GHB, also known as the “date rape” drug, in his vehicle, according to a Mono County Sheriff’s Department statement. Highway 395, a popular travel route to Black Rock Desert, cuts through Mono County.

Charges against Gerber were not filed because he was offered and accepted entrance into a diversion program, the Mono County District Attorney’s Office said.

State to license drivers who are here illegally


[trib_ndn vid=25165678]SACRAMENTO — Laboring late into the night Thursday to finish their work for the year, state lawmakers acted to allow many more immigrants who are in the country illegally to obtain California driver’s licenses, a measure Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign.

Ttraffic-highwayhe driver’s license measure would significantly expand the number of immigrants in the country illegally who could have such documents. Some young, undocumented residents are already eligible for licenses under state law, if they qualify for temporary federal work permits.

“This bill will enable millions of people to get to work safely and legally,” Brown said in a statement issued immediately after the bill passed. “Hopefully, it will send a message to Washington that immigration reform is long past due.”

The bill, AB 60, by Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville), originally would have provided licenses to immigrants who could show that they pay taxes or otherwise work in the…

This morning at 9:00 Arne Duncan the United States Secretary of Education will finish his fourth annual “Strong Start, Bright Future” back-to-school bus tour at Castle Park Middle School. Duncan and several of the Department of Education top officials began this tour in Santa Fe New Mexico and have been all across the South West. The tour is meant to highlight the importance of high quality educational opportunities and address immigration reform’s impact on education.

San Diego County’s regional growth forecast and transportation is on the agenda this morning for the San Diego Association of Governments Board of Directors this morning at 10:00.

Preparing for disasters and hands-on CPT training is all happening this morning at 10:00 AM at the San Diego headquarters of the American Red Cross.

At 10:45 this morning Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth will help nurture emerging musical talent at the sixth annual San Diego Music Thing.

And finally … the 49th annual San Diego Bayfair hydroplane races get underway starting at 7:45 AM. Today the teams can begin training on the course with the races over the weekend finishing Sunday afternoon with the big finally race. Best viewing is from Vacation Island, Ski Beach, Crown Point Shores, and Fiesta Island.
