Tip leads ICE agents to Mexican murder suspect


Perez Hernandez, Mexican Murder SuspectSAN DIEGO — A previously deported Mexican suspected of bludgeoning another man to death with a baseball bat in Mexico three years ago was caught in the Los Angeles area and deported, federal agents said Tuesday.

Mateo Perez Hernandez, 28, was turned over to Mexican authorities at San Ysidro and handed over to the Mexican Attorney General’s Office, according to agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Hernandez is suspected of killing Eduardo Fuentes of Mexicali, Mexico, after Hernandez’s brother argued with Fuentes outside a party in September 2010, authorities said.

Mexican authorities in Baja issued a warrant charging him in Fuentes’ death, but Hernandez allegedly fled to avoid prosecution.

San Diego-based ICE enforcement and removal operations officers received information about Perez Hernandez from the FBI on Aug. 8 and determined he was probably living in La Habra.

La Habra authorities arrested him on a drug offense Aug. 25.

[trib_ndn vid=25094681]SAN DIEGO – The San Diego City Council will take on the task Wednesday of setting a special election date to fill the seat of Mayor Bob Filner.

City Clerk Liz Maland will present a proposal to City Council Wednesday pushing for November 19 to be the date for the special election.

More than half a dozen candidates have filed for candidacy, with Carl DeMaio, Kevin Faulconer and Todd Gloria expected to announce soon.

San Diego City Council“The speed of this is going to be something like whiplash,” said Liam Dillon, political reporter for the Voice of San Diego. He said when the date of the election is set; candidates are going to have to move quickly.

“All the major candidates will need to raise about $100,000 in the first week alone to really be able to have a shot to be legitimate in this,” said Dillon.

Today we don’t have any news about Bob Filner. Imagine that.

But there is a bunch going on in court.

First in San Diego’s downtown courthouse at 1:30 this afternoon the seven people accused of being part of a ring of thieves that stole metal from the USS Midway Museum are set to be arraigned. They range in ages from 26 to 61 Last week the museum fired 14 people who were suspected of stealing the recyclables but the District Attorney is charging seven.

Also in San Diego at 1:30 PM the “Dare Me Bandit” Alex Sanchez is going to be sentenced for robbing several convenience stores and fast food restaurants last year.

This afternoon at 1:30 in El Cajon’s courthouse Lymarie Rodriguez will be arraigned and accused of stabbing someone he was trying to rob.

Then in Vista after lunch Daniel Hernandez will be sentenced for murdering a woman he was acquainted with and trying to kill her 8-yer-old daughter.

And tonight at 7:00 El Cajon’s city council is getting together to talk about creating regulations for retail alcohol sales.
