The 44th annual “Comic-Con International: San Diego” officially starts this morning at 9:30. Over the next four days over 126,000 fans and celebrities are crowding into downtown San Diego for 4 days of fun. This year it’s the 35th anniversary of “Battlestar Galactica” the 20th for “X-Files” and the 10th for the comic book turned AMC smash hit “The Walking Dead” All morning long KSWB FOX5 is live from the Hard Rock Hotel’s pool deck. Not only is Comic Con happening but it’s also Gamer Con time. Gamer Con is in its fourth year of video game enthusiasm. They have a competitive video game arena, gaming panels, geek theatre, and even rooftop parties. Gamer Con official starts at 2:00 this afternoon at the 10th Avenue Theatre.

In more serious news

A man is in jail today and accused of walking into a mosque in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego and threating to kill Muslims worshiping during Ramadan. Reportedly 52-year-old Larry Michael Rodgers walked into the Islamic Center of San Diego at around 5:00 AM Monday morning and said “I’m going to kill you all” then left. Several member of the congregation followed Rodgers calling police along the way. Rodgers is being held on $50,000 bail.

In San Diego’s downtown courthouse three stories of note

First at 9:00 AM the trial of Alex Charfauros begins. Charfauros is charged with the murder of a San Diego Police officer in 2010.

Also at 9:00 Thomas Burleson’s trial begins. Burleson is accused of stealing electronic equipment like iPads form nine elementary schools.

Then this afternoon at 1:30 Arturo Hugo Lopez is being arraigned. He’s accused of groping three women as walked near Horton Plaza.

At 10:00 this morning Assemblywoman Shirley Weber and other community leaders will talk to the press about the George Zimmerman acquittal.

And finally the National Weather Service says that big surf and dangerous rip currents will be scouring San Diego County beaches today. Starting this afternoon through Sunday the hazardous surf will bring 6-foot waves with sets toping 8-feet. That means the face of the wave could be as high as 16 feet. This is not the weekend to learn to surf.
