Mayor acknowledges sexual harassment, but refuses to resign


[trib_ndn vid=24942330]SAN DIEGO — Mayor Bob Filner released an apologetic statement Thursday in response to allegations that he sexually harassed a number of women, but he refused to resign from office.
His statement follows:

bob-filnerI begin today by apologizing to you. I have diminished the office to which you elected me.

The charges made at today’s news conference are serious. When a friend like Donna Frye is compelled to call for my resignation, I’m clearly doing something wrong. I have reached into my heart and soul and realized I must and will change my behavior.

As someone who has spent a lifetime fighting for equality for all people, I am embarrassed to admit that I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times I have intimidated them.

Three former supporters of San Diego’s Mayor Bob Filner are accusing him of sexual harassment. Former Councilwoman Donna Frye along with two lawyers Marco Gonzalez and Cory Briggs are also calling for the Mayor to resign. Frye wrote in a letter to the mayor that she has “received credible evidence of more than one woman being sexually harassed by you.” Mayor Filner has been embroiled in one scandal after another lately. First he’s being accused of having a quid pro quo arrangement with a developer for donations to the city. Then two top staffer quite saying he was impossible to work with and has lost his way politically. His girlfriend dumped him. And now these sexual harassment accusations.

The claims will be addressed this morning in a press conference at 10:00 at the Briggs Law offices. Political junkies are fascinated to see what comes next and if it’s possible for him to survive.

In unrelated political news at 11:30 this morning California’s Governor Jerry Brown is signing legislation that offers sales tax exemptions and creates some investment incentives.

At 1:00 the San Diego County Water Authority will have its first public meeting for the Integrated Regional Water Management Plan. The plan is about San Diego water supply reliability, water quality, and San Diego Counties eleven watersheds.

At 6:00 this evening the San Diego Association of Governments is hosting its first public meeting about health and mobility in San Ysidro. There will be two more after this one.

And at 11:30 AM San Diego County Crime Commission is hosting its fifth-annual award luncheon for the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol Volunteers.

Finally … tonight at 7:30 at Humphreys by the Bay Huey Lewis and the News are performing. Little known fact about Huey Lewis … he learned to play the harmonica while living in Morocco.

[trib_ndn vid=24940769]SAN DIEGO – Three former supporters of Mayor Bob Filner who this week called on him to resign are scheduled to outline their concerns over sexual harassment allegations Thursday.

Former Councilwoman Donna Frye delivered a letter asking Filner to step down as mayor citing sexual harassment allegations by more than one woman.

“I have recently received credible evidence of more than one woman being sexually harassed by you,” Frye wrote in the letter. “Despite past rumors, I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt.”

Mayor Bob FilnerFrye, the mayor’s director of open government until April, wrote in her letter than she “recently received credible evidence of more than one woman being sexually harassed by you.” In a letter posted on the website of KPBS Radio, she said she’d heard rumors previously but tried to give the mayor the benefit of the doubt.
