AM Briefing from for July 8, 2013

Over 800 firefighters are battling the Chariot Fire this morning. The fire started just before 1:00 Sunday afternoon and at last reporting has burned over 2500 acres and is 20 percent contained. Several campgrounds and some residents have been evacuated and the American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine. CAL Fire will update us as soon the sun comes up.

Today many of the holiday weekend partiers that got tickets for things like drinking in public or urinating in public can work of their tickets in San Diego’s Instant Justice program. In lieu of paying what could be hundreds of dollars in fines those with certain minor infractions can bring $40 cast to the Pacific Beach Shore Club and pick up trash all across San Diego’s beaches. Last year over 100 offenders completed nearly 550 hours of work.

San Diego’s City Council is meeting today. First this morning at 9:00 the Audit Committee is talking about proposed audits this year. Then this afternoon at 2:00 the whole council is meeting and will talk about parking restrictions on oversized vehicles and the cities Real Estate Assets Department performance.

In honor of the 19-firefighters killed fighting the Yarnell Hill fire last week the U.S. Honor Flag will arrive at San Diego’s International Airport at 11:40 AM and then be escorted by San Diego Police officers to Phoenix. The U.S. Honor Flag began when Chris Heisler brought the flag to ground zero just after 9/11. Now it makes its way around the country honoring our heroes.
