Sheriff’s SWAT team called to Imperial Beach


IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. — A SWAT team was called to Imperial Beach Friday after someone fired shots at a deputy, authorities said.

The gunfire was reported at 1385 Holly Ave. near 14th Street at about 8:30 a.m. A deputy was assaulted by a man while investigating a report of domestic violence, according to deputies. The man had barricaded himself into an apartment and was threatening to shoot officers and police dogs if they attempted to enter, but it was not known for sure if he was armed, deputies said.

Helicopter video showed numerous Sheriff’s vehicles deployed around a two-story apartment building. Deputies could be seen interviewing residents and walking around outside of the apartment building.

Elderly man accused of shooting wife after being served with divorce papers


[trib_ndn vid=24898752]LA MESDA, Calif. — An 82-year-old La Mesa man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of shooting his wife of 54 years after she served him with divorce papers.

Elderly Man Shoots WifeClyde Jay Hayen allegedly opened fire at the couple’s home in the 7300 block of Princeton Avenue about 11:15 p.m. Thursday.

Paramedics took the 73-year-old victim to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to her abdomen and one of her hands, police Lt. Matt Nicholass said. She was listed in stable condition Friday morning and was expected to recover.

Hayen was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Veterans Villiage of San Diego holds clothing drive @VVSD_Veterans


Veterans-VillageSAN DIEGO — Veterans Village of San Diego will hold a daylong clothing drive beginning at 6 a.m. today, ahead of next month’s annual Stand Down event, which connects homeless veterans with services.

Organizers of the drive will accept donations of new or gently used clothing through 3 p.m. at the veterans shelter at 4141 Pacific Highway.

They also said they need washcloths, new men’s and women’s underwear, toiletries — including hand sanitizer — shoes and socks.

The VVSD says it expects to serve around 1,000 homeless veterans during the three-day Stand Down, which is scheduled for July 12-14 at San Diego High School.

Late last night an 82-year-old man shot his 73-year-old wife after she served him with divorce papers. The elderly woman was shot in her hand and abdomen. She was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Two men that raped a woman in a downtown parking garage are scheduled to be sentenced this morning at 9:00 in San Diego’s Downtown Courthouse. 30-year-old Tresor Ndandu and 54-year-old Laroy Phelps attacked an intoxicated woman in the trash room of her downtown apartment building’s parking garage. Ndandu is looking at 24-years and Phelps 18.

The continuing political fight between Mayor Bob Filner and City Attorney Jan Goldsmith is a little hotter now. Yesterday it came out that the Mayor had the police remove one of the City Attorney’s top lawyers during a closed-session meeting. According to a partial transcript of the meeting Mayor Filner asked the attorney if he was going to leak anything from the meeting. Of course the attorney refused to answer. KGTV obtained a copy of the transcript and posted them on-line.


The San Diego County Fair is hosting the seventh annual San Diego International Beer Competition and Festival this weekend. The Sheriff’s department says do not drink and drive. Law enforcement will be on the lookout for drunk drivers and they say “If you’re over the limit you will be arrested.” So take a cab, the train, hell hire a limo, but don’t drink and drive.

Veterans Village of San Diego is having an all-day clothing drive starting at 6:00 AM. They are accepting new or gently used clothes until 3:00 this afternoon. This is all part of their lead up to the annual three-day Stand Down event for homeless veterans. You can take your donations to the shelter at 4141 Pacific Highway.

It’s Olympics Day and the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista is celebrating this morning at 10:30. Kids from the South Bay Family YMCA and some Olympic hopefuls will hold an opening ceremony then they’re all taking part in some sports

And finally tonight at 5:45 the San Diego Zoo is giving a special preview of its summertime nighttime zoo program. Officially it starts Saturday. The event coincides with the opening of the Conrad Prebys Australian Outback exhibit.
