Tanker truck crash causes major traffic jam

SAN DIEGO — Southbound Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton turned into a virtual parking lot Friday after a crash involving a box truck, a propane tanker and a 99 Cent Only Store big rig blocked all lanes of the freeway, authorities said.

The crash in northern San Diego County near the shuttered San Onofre nuclear reactor happened about 7:10 a.m. on south I-5, just north of the scales, and quickly backed up traffic headed into San Diego County from Orange County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Tanker-TruckA 52-year-old man was driving the 2006 Freightliner pulling a 99 cent store trailer was approaching the commercial inspection facility and crashed into the propane tanker truck, CHP officer Jim Bettencourt said.

CHP said the tanker truck was then pushed into a flat bed truck and two box trucks waiting in line to enter the facility.
