Southern California Edison is closing the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station

Southern California Edison announces they are “retiring” the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in a press release posted on the company website.

Chairman and COE Ted Craver says “SONGS has served this region for over 40 years … but we have concluded that the continuing uncertainty about when or if SONGS might return to service was not good for our customers, our investors, or the need to plan for our region’s long-term electricity needs.”

Reactors 2 and 3 have been shut down since January 2012. Reactor 2 was taken off line for routine maintenance and reactor 3 was shut when a steam generator malfunctioned.
