[trib_ndn vid=24868357]ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A busy North County intersection just west of Interstate 15 was closed today as detectives investigated an officer-involved shooting in which a heavily armed fugitive was killed.

San Diego police, including gang-unit personnel, had been keeping the suspect under surveillance before they tried to pull him over as he drove through Escondido in a red Ford SUV about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The man refused to yield and sped off, Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin said. As the officers gave chase, the suspect lost control of the vehicle, sending it crashing into a wall at Avenida Magoria and Del Lago Boulevard, near Kit Carson Park.
