3 Hikers Missing in Big Bear Found Safe

BIG BEAR, Calif. (KTLA) — Three hikers who were missing for several days in Big Bear talked to KTLA about how they survived until being found safe Tuesday morning.

David Yoder, 43, Ryan Shankles, 41, and Miguel De La Torre, all of Oceanside, had been missing since Saturday.

Shankles said he and his friends never lost hope, even after a search helicopter flew overhead on Monday but did not see them.

“Today you know we woke up early and just set out, we built a bigger bonfire pit on top of a better lookout.” Shankles said.

The men were located by a sheriff’s patrol helicopter around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Northfork Meadows, close to Mineshaft Campground, according to a news release.

All three appeared to be in good condition and were reunited with their families.
