Activists plan May Day marches for immigration reform

SAN DIEGO — Immigrant rights activists will hold a “May Day” rally and march in San Diego on Wednesday and a similar event in Vista.

“May 1st has traditionally been a day in which immigrants and their supporters have taken to the streets in the United States to ask for immigration reform,” said Christian Ramirez, who heads a coalition pushing for an immigration bill in Congress.

He said the goal of the events will be to acknowledge the contributions of immigrant workers to society, especially those “left behind by a broken immigration system.”

At 2 p.m., a rally is scheduled at Civic Center Plaza, 202 C Street, followed by a march to Chicano Park in Barrio Logan.

At 3 p.m. in Vista, a march will begin at Bobier Drive and South Santa Fe Avenue and end at the Vista Courthouse on South Melrose Drive.
