AM Briefing from for April 15, 2013

San Diego’s City Council is going to try to override Mayor Bob Filner’s veto of the Tourism Marketing District agreement this afternoon. The Tourism Marketing District or T-M-D hit the media spot light when Mayor Filner decides it was a bad deal for San Diego. The T-M-D uses a 2% hotel surcharge to produce and run ads promoting San Diego as a tourist destination. Filner thinks the money should be used for other things. Six votes of the nine City Council votes are needed to override the veto.

Mayor Filner is also going to release his budget proposal for this fiscal year at a 9:00 AM press conference.

In court this afternoon Elizabeth Ann Masters is being sentenced for stealing almost $6 million dollars from her former employer. The 45-year-old forged hundreds of payroll checks and then fled to New Mexico where she was arrested last June. Reportedly she used here ill-gotten gain to buy a ranch with many horses then she swindled other people out of more money by telling them she had cancer and needed the donations to take care of her horses.

San Diego’s mountains and deserts are under a high wind warning today. The National Weather Service says that winds from 25 to 35 mild per hour with the occasional gust of 60 – 75 miles an hour will scour the east county today. Blowing dust will lower visibility in some areas making driving difficult. Off shore seas are expected to be rough and choppy with the wind gusting up to 30 knots … that’s about 34 mild per hour … a small craft warning is in effect.
